Today I got a letter from the provost confirming my tenure and promotion to associate professor! My lab past and present have been the best, their insights, support, hard work and exciting science made it all possible!
While tenure went smoothly for me, there were many years in the postdoc wilderness where my future was uncertain. If this seems familiar, know you are not alone and that perseverance and sometimes sheer bloody-mindedness can pay off.

@WhySharksMatter Just said he is more honored to have a Friend of MISS badge than he is to have a plenary ribbon 😭. He also said one of the easiest ways to support DEI efforts is to donate to orgs already doing the work (misselasmo.org/donate)
Wow what a great way to deliver for the British people by making international students have to live without their support network - this achieves nothing!
From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK.
In 2024, we’re already delivering for the British people.

Curious about a #BCEENET CURE? They’re game-changers for students for so many reasons! Implementers have the opportunity to teach research skills and offer students real-life experiences to get them started in their careers. Learn more here! bceenetwork.org#STEMEd
ALT The graphic reads: “Curious about CUREs? Students gain real research experience in ecology & evolution, and hands-on practice with data management and statistical analysis, as well as a deeper understanding of the scientific process!”
The ad is finally out! The Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University is hiring TWO assistant professors with a focus on microbiomes of all types. Come join us! apply.interfolio.com/133438
“The winners will be okay. Rather than hunting for villains in their stories, I’m better off using their inspiration and frustration to help find the next Frances Arnold, Carolyn Bertozzi, or Katalin Karikó, many struggling to find a way to participate in science.”
“The more uncomfortable truth is that academic science has never been a trade that selects for or supports the best scientific minds in the world.”
