Fabrizio Sgura started programming at 12 years old with Basic and Assembler on a Sinclair. Every npm install, pip install, and cargo add hits a package registry. And those registries are quietly breaking under the weight. Open source registries hit close to 10 trillion downloads in 2025. That’s over one billion per hour. Registries run on infrastructure donations and heroic efforts from small paid teams and unpaid volunteers. But @linuxfoundation just formed the Sustaining Package Registries Working Group to bring registry leaders together to align on funding models, shared security coordination, and governance frameworks.
