I think this is a great way to represent how sonic looked to most people at the height of his popularity. Even in PAL regions where they got the JP boxart, sonic had a mohawk in their comics, shows and ads. Ohshima was inspired by it later too. It's nothing to be ashamed of!

You can REALLY see the American Sonic inspiration in his late 90s work, it makes sense that he'd be inspired by folks who consistently work on the cartoon IPs he himself was inspired by to make sonic
