Still smelling smoke? A little atmospheric #science
ALT The Sun's heating during the day keeps the lower atmosphere "mixed" and as a result winds are typically stronger and smoke is dispersed more easily. After sunset, the lower atmosphere cools and a shallow stable boundary layer forms. The winds are typically lower at night and as a result there is less turbulent mixing. This is why smoke from fireworks can linger well after the show ends.

With the fireworks tonight, and the 🟠 air quality alert for tomorrow, we’ll be watching - thanks to the watchdogs staying alert for all of us!

Quick reminder of what happened last year on the 4th of July. US Steel had a major power outage at Clairton Coke Works and proceeded to show this amazing display of flaring and dark plumes of who-knows-what. Watch out tomorrow! Fireworks aren't the only possible smoke sources.
