From D-Day to his 100th birthday.
Lt Cdr George Spencer has lived through a century of history and helped shape it.
As a 16-year-old Boy Leading Seaman, George served aboard HMS Nelson during some of the most significant moments of the Second World War, including the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. His naval career went on to span nearly three decades, taking him around the world and across 28 vessels.
Now, at 100 years old, George has been honoured in his home village of Gracehill, Northern Ireland, where he officially opened a new community path in front of family, friends, Royal Navy personnel and local residents.
Reflecting on his service, George said:
“The Royal Navy means a lot to me. I have fond memories of my long naval career, and I am proud of my service.”
Stories like George’s remind us of the lasting contribution made by those who have served and the importance of preserving their experiences for future generations.
Join us in wishing George a very happy 100th birthday. 🎉
