Japan Might Have the Weirdest Sport If you think Japan has some strange hobbies, wait until you hear about this one. In Japan, grown adults put on helmets and elbow pads, climb into regular office chairs, and race each other for two straight hours. It’s called ISU-1GP, and it’s an actual organized sport. It started in 2010 as a silly local event in a shopping street in Kyoto. A few shop owners were trying to bring more people to the area, so they came up with the idea of racing office chairs. What began as a joke eventually turned into something much bigger. By 2015, it had grown enough that the Japan Office Chair Racing Association was formed. Now there are official races held in multiple cities across the country. Teams of three take turns pushing each other in regular rolling office chairs around a closed course. The team that completes the most laps in TWO HOURS wins! #Japan #WeirdSport #SportsFacts #OfficeChairRacing #ISU-1GP DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Who Had The Greatest Rookie Season in All Sports? If you think your favorite player’s rookie year was insane… you’ve never seen what Wilt Chamberlain did in 1959. On October 24, 1959, a 7-foot-1, 258-pound rookie named Wilt Chamberlain stepped onto an NBA court for the Philadelphia Warriors. He immediately became the highest-paid player in the league with a $30,000 rookie contract, more than established stars like Bob Cousy were making, and the same amount the owner had paid to buy the entire franchise just seven years earlier. He went out and averaged 37.6 points and 27.0 rebounds per game. He led the entire league in both categories. He won MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season. And he dragged a mediocre Warriors team from 32 wins all the way to 49 wins and the Eastern Division Finals. Those numbers still stand as some of the most ridiculous in sports history more than 65 years later. #Rookie #WiltChamberlain #Basketball #GOAT #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Formula 1 Drivers No Longer Matter Formula 1 Drivers No Longer Matter. Today’s modern F1 feels so predictable and that’s because the drivers don’t matter nearly as much as they used to and I’ll prove to you why. Mercedes has the best car, and Kimi Antonelli is running away with the championship. Last year it was McLaren with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Before that, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes dominated Formula 1 for years. When a driver wins the championship, their teammate is usually right there too. Valtteri Bottas finished runner-up multiple times behind Hamilton. Mark Webber was near the top while Sebastian Vettel won four straight titles. The car matters far more than the driver in modern F1. Monaco is often over after qualifying. Get pole on Saturday, win on Sunday. Go back to Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Gilles Villeneuve, Mario Andretti, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, and Michael Schumacher. The one exception might be Max Verstappen. He can make a Red Bull look unbeatable while his teammates struggle. Kimi Antonelli is a great driver. But he's not better than Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, or Sergio Perez. #F1 #Racing #KimiAntonelli #F1Car #NikkiLauda DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. What's the Difference Between a No-Hitter and a Perfect Game? Most people think a no-hitter and a perfect game are basically the same thing. They’re not. Here’s how rare they are: There have been over 330 no-hitters pitched in MLB history. But there have only been 24 perfect games. This jersey belongs to the man who threw one of those 24 perfect games and quite possibly the scariest man to ever throw one. The Big Unit. Randy Johnson. Yes, he’s the same guy that threw a pitch that hit a bird flying across home plate. "The Big Unit" retired all 27 batters, striking out 13 on 117 pitches. At 40 years and 256 days old, Johnson broke Cy Young's record to become the oldest pitcher to throw a perfect game. Ok, so he retired all 27 batters in order, 3 up, 3 down in each of the 9 innings. No hits or walks, or errors. No one reached base for any reason. That’s the difference. A no-hitter means the pitcher gave up no hits (meaning that if they do hit the ball, it gets caught, or the runner gets thrown out at first base so then it does not count as a hit. Now, in a no-hitter, batters can still reach base on walks, errors, or hit-by-pitches. A perfect game means nobody reaches base at all. 27 up, 27 down. Good night, Charlie. Zero chances to score a run. #Baseball #MLB #PerfectGame #NoHitter #RandyJohnson #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Too Fat For Team USA Barkey was too fat for the Olympic Team. Barkley was one of the most dominant college players in America at Auburn, yet Bob Knight cut him from the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, reportedly because Knight thought he was too heavy and didn’t like his conditioning. In 1984 he was named SEC Player of the Year, averaged nearly 15 points and 10 rebounds a game, and led Auburn to its very first NCAA Tournament. Then he got drafted fifth overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. That same year, he tried out for the U.S. Olympic team. Bob Knight cut him. Reportedly because he thought Barkley was too fat and out of shape. Hilarious in hindsight. Because the guy Knight cut went on to make the 1992 Dream Team… and led that entire team in scoring. #Barkley #Auburn #Basketball #NBA #DreamTeam DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Boxers Have to Wear Gloves If you’ve ever watched boxing and wondered why they wear those big padded gloves, the answer is actually pretty dark. It all starts with the Queensbury Rules… and you might be surprised at the reason! Before gloves, boxing was basically a street fight with rules. Fighters used bare knuckles, and the goal wasn’t just to win — it was often to break the other guy’s hands or face. Fights could last for hours, and serious injuries were extremely common. A lot of fighters ended up with permanently damaged faces and hands or worse. By the mid-1800s, boxing had such a bad reputation for being too brutal and barbaric that many people wanted it banned completely. That’s where the Queensberry Rules come in. In 1867, a new set of rules was introduced that changed everything. These rules were drafted by John Graham Chambers in London in the 1860s and published in 1867. They were named after John Douglas, the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, because he publicly endorsed them. Gloves made the sport slightly less savage, which helped boxing survive and become more accepted as a real sport instead of just a bloodsport. But get this…so while gloves do offer some protection to the person getting hit in the face, the ORIGINAL REASON they were required was actually to protect the person throwing the punches. They were there to protect the boxers hands, NOT the other guys face. #Boxing #BoxingGloves #SportsFacts #SportsHistory #QueensberryRules DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. We Got Weights In Fish! This might be the dumbest sports cheating scandal ever. “We Got Weights In Fish” was the quote on live television! And I need you to understand, the evidence was literally inside the fish. In 2022, two guys were competing in a walleye fishing tournament on Lake Erie. The basic idea of the tournament is simple. You catch fish, they weigh the fish, and the heaviest total wins. So obviously, someone eventually looked at that system and thought, “What if the fish were heavier because I put heavy things inside them?” The tournament director, Jason Fischer, started getting suspicious because these fish were weighing way more than they looked like they should. And instead of just arguing about it, he did the most dramatic possible thing, he cut one open. And out came lead weights. And then someone yells the line that made the whole thing internet history: “We got weights in fish!” Which is honestly one of the greatest sentences ever spoken in sports. The anglers, Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky, were disqualified. They were later charged, pleaded guilty, got short jail sentences, fines, three-year fishing license suspensions, and Cominsky had to give up his $100,000 boat. #Fishing #Fishermen #WeightsInFish #Cheating #Scandal DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Did COVID Kill His Shot? This jersey belongs to a guy most NBA fans have probably never heard of. And honestly… that might be COVID’s fault. This is Myles Powell, number 13 for Seton Hall. And yeah, I know. He was Big East Player of the Year. He won the Jerry West Award as the best shooting guard in the country. He was a consensus first-team All-American. At Seton Hall, that is not normal at all, that is all-time program-history stuff. On paper, he belongs in the school’s big-name conversation with Terry Dehere, Bob Davies, Walter Dukes, and the other Pirate legends. He scored over 2,200 points, won Big East Player of the Year, and became one of the most decorated players in school history. And then March Madness disappeared. They cancelled the tournament due to COVID. So, Powell did’t get this opportunity for a “tournament run”. #MylesPowell #SetonHall #BigEast #Basketball #MarchMadness #NBA DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Montreal Got Robbed The City of Montreal got flat out robbed of a World Series Championship. In 1994, the Montreal Expos had the best record in all of baseball. Not close — the best. They had Larry Walker, Moisés Alou, a young Pedro Martínez, and everything was lining up for a real run. This wasn’t a fun little story. This was a team that could actually win the whole thing. And then this happened… In 1994, the Expos had the best record in all of baseball. Not “pretty good” — the best. sitting with a 74 and 40 winning record, as I mentioned earlier, quite the roster! Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom, Ken Hill (who you could argue was the best pitcher that entire year), closer John Wetteland, starter Jeff Fassero, Underrated catcher Darrin Fletcher and 2nd baseman Mike Lansing, and well as a good support group in Cliff Floyd, Sean Barry, Wil Cordero, Butch Henry, Gil Heredia and of course don’t forget a young star in the making in Pedro Martinez. Anything short of a trip to the World Series would be a disappointment. And then…. the season just… ended. Then there was a players’ strike in August, just a few weeks before the start of the playoffs, Major League Baseball cancels the rest of the season. That’s it. The season ended. No playoffs. No World Series. Just… over. #MLB #MontrealExpos #Baseball #SportsHistory #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why the term “rookie” used in sports? The word actually started in the military. Back in the 1860s, new soldiers — raw, inexperienced recruits — were called “rookies.” It was most likely just a playful shortening or twist on the word “recruit.” The term caught on fast and showed up in Rudyard Kipling’s poems in the 1890s. Then, right around 1908, American sports writers started using it for baseball. A first-year player in the big leagues was the new guy on the team — young, green, and still learning the ropes — so the military slang fit perfectly. From there it spread to every major sport. NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB — if it’s your first season, you’re a rookie. #Rookie #Soldiers #Military #Sports #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. A Secret About The MLB Logo Left Handed? Right Handed? Oh, there is a bigger secret than that! People argue constantly about whether the player in the MLB logo is a left-handed or right-handed hitter. But I’m going to tell you something about it that I bet you didn’t know! The logo was designed in 1968 by Jerry Dior. He didn’t base it on one specific player (a lot of people think it’s Harmon Killebrew, but Dior has always denied that). Instead, he intentionally made it an optical illusion so it could be seen as either left-handed or right-handed depending on how you look at it. If you look at it from the front, with the white space as home plate, the batter looks left-handed. If you imagine looking at him from behind, he looks right-handed. Dior did this on purpose so the logo wouldn’t favor one handedness or one type of player. It was meant to represent all of baseball. He wanted the logo to be ambidextrous — to represent all players. But here’s the real secret…. He may have aimed for ambidextrous… but he accidentally made it amphibious. Yeah. The official MLB logo has been low-key a rubber ducky this whole time. #MLB #MLBLogo #Baseball #SportsFacts #MLBSecret DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Racehorses All Share Same Birthday! Every single Thoroughbred racehorse in the Northern Hemisphere has the exact same birthday of Janaury 1… even though they weren’t born on that day. And in the Southern Hemisphere, their birthdays are August 1. No matter if a foal is born on January 2nd or December 31st, on January 1st they all officially turn one year older. It sounds completely arbitrary — until you understand why it exists. Horse racing needed a simple, fair way to group horses by age for races. So racing authorities decided: everyone’s official birthday is January 1st. It keeps the age classes clean — all the two-year-olds race against each other, no matter when they actually entered the world. The rule was formalized by the English Jockey Club in the 1830s (changed from the old May 1 date) and fully adopted by 1858. It spread worldwide because it made age-based racing classes simple and fair. But that one rule completely changed how horses are bred. Because a horse born on January 2 is considered the same age as one born on December 31. So a horse born on December 31st might be racing another 2 year old that was born on January 2, a full 11 and a half months earlier. So of course the older horse is stronger, faster, more developed. So now this has pushed breeders to try and get foals on the ground as early as possible. They want them born as close to January 1st as possible, without being early and born in December! They even use artificial lighting in barns to trick mares into coming into season earlier than nature wants. I mean, getting an edge can turn into millions of dollars. This is big business. Pretty wild when you think about it! Oh, and why is the Southern Hemisphere on August 1? Well, because their breeding season is flipped. #HorseRacing #Horses #Derby #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. The Greatest Losers of All Time The Washington Generals might be the greatest losers in sports history. And I mean that as a compliment. For decades, the Harlem Globetrotters have toured the world playing exhibition games. And almost every single time… they win. Except for once! The Washington Generals are the opponents to the Harlem Globetrotters, day in and day out. And they lose. Every single game. And yes — the outcome is designed. But here’s what people get wrong: They’re not random guys pulled from the crowd. They are real, skilled basketball players. Many played college ball. Some had professional experience They have one win. At the time of this recording, they are estimated to have a record of a about 1 and 17,000. Yep. 1 win and almost 17,000 losses While the Globetrotters were entertaining the crowd that day, they lost track of the game and the score. They found themselves down 12 points with two minutes left to go. Forced to play normal basketball, the Globetrotters rallied but could not recover. Then in the final seconds, Meadowlark Lemon missed a shot that would have given the game back to the Globetrotters. When the final buzzer sounded, the crowd was dumbfounded and disappointed. Why Do We Call It the Bullpen? How did the Bullpen get it’s name in baseball? You know that area where the relief pitchers warm-up before being called in to the game? How it got it’s name dates back almost 150 years ago! The term "bullpen" first appeared in baseball in 1877 (and possibly earlier). At that time, it had nothing to do with pitchers. And remember, there were no relief pitchers in the game at that time. That hadn’t been invented yet. Back then, baseball stadiums were not stadiums at all, but very small and sold very cheap tickets. Late-arriving fans were often herded into roped-off standing areas down the foul lines. People started calling those areas the “bullpen” — because people grouped in there mimicked like being cattle in a pen. When relief pitching became more common in the early 1900s, pitchers began warming up in those same spots near the outfield. So the name just carried over from the fans to the pitchers. Around that same time, almost every ballpark in America had giant Bull Durham tobacco signs on the outfield walls. The signs were so common that many people assumed the “bullpen” was named after the tobacco ads. #Baseball #MLB #BullDurham #Pitchers #SportsFacts #SportsHistory DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Golfers Yell "Fore" You’ve probably heard it a hundred times on the golf course — someone hits a bad shot and yells “Fore!” But why that word? Why not just “Watch out!” or “Duck!” like a normal person? The answer goes all the way back to 18th-century Scotland, where modern golf was born. Back then, courses didn’t have ropes or marshals keeping people safe. Instead, they used “forecaddies” these were guys who walked way ahead of the group to spot where balls landed and keep the course moving. When a player was about to hit, the caddie would shout “Fore!” as a warning — short for “forecaddie!” or “look before you!” — to tell the people ahead to watch out. Over time the “caddie” part dropped away, and “Fore!” just became the universal warning shout in golf. It’s short, loud, and everyone knows exactly what it means. That’s why you’ll almost never hear a golfer yell “Watch out!” or “Duck!” — “Fore!” is the one word that’s been used for over 200 years, and golf is a sport that loves its traditions. So next time you hear it, you’ll know it’s not random — it’s a 200-year-old Scottish version of “heads-up”. #Golf #Fore #Caddie #Scotland #StAndrews #SportsFacts DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Is It Called Boxing? Why do we call the sport “boxing”…and not just fighting, punching, or fistfighting? It feels like such a random word when you really think about it but there is a reason and I’m about to tell you! A lot of people still believe that the word boxing came from making a box shape with your fist.. and although it does look that way, it is incorrect. Others think it has something to do with Christmas boxes. They say it comes from old England — like 1600s, 1700s — where servants would get something called a “Christmas box,” it was basically a bonus or tip. And supposedly, people would fight each other for money or prizes tied to that… and those fights got called “boxing matches,” like you were literally fighting for a “box.” Sounds great. Nice, clean story. The problem is… there’s not much real evidence that’s actually where the word comes from. I mean, it’s one of those cool explanations that feels right — but historians don’t really treat it as the true origin. So, Both of those are wrong. The real answer is much simpler. The word “boxing” comes from the old English verb “Boxen”, which meant “to strike or hit with the fist.” That meaning dates back to at least the late 1300s. Before it was widely called boxing, the sport was known as pugilism — from the Latin word pugil, meaning a fighter who uses his fists. So when modern boxing started taking shape in England in the 1700s and 1800s, the name “boxing” already described exactly what the fighters were doing: hitting each other with their fists. #Boxing #Fighting #SportsHistory #SportsFacts #Pugilism DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect. Why Is A Football/Soccer Field Is Called a "Pitch"? We call it a field in America… but pretty much everywhere else in the world, it’s a “pitch.” Why THAT weird word? The term goes all the way back to 17th- and 18th-century England and Scotland. Back then, when people wanted to set up a game — whether it was cricket, football, or even a market — they would literally “pitch” the area. That meant marking out the boundaries with stakes, ropes, or lines on the grass. The playing surface was the spot that had been “pitched.” Cricket was the first sport to widely use the word “pitch” for its playing area (the strip in the middle is still called the pitch today). When association football (or soccer) was officially organized in the 1860s and 1870s, they simply borrowed the same term. The field was the area that had been “pitched” out for the match. #Soccer #Football #Pitch #SoccerField #SportsHistory DISCLAIMER: We do our best to research every story we share — but facts, sources, and memories aren’t always perfect.
