Hypothetically, this is how I would set it up. The Wednesday game should be a Tigers Hinch bullpen game special. I’m riding or dying with the strength of the team. Pérez wouldn’t even make the roster for me. He performed well on the surface with the Padres but his FIP was still 4.82. Meanwhile Jacob and Reynold’s FIPs were 2.28 and 0.98 respectfully. Yeah they’re inexperienced so you worry about nerves but they’re clearly better than Pérez. The dodgers projected starting lineup has owned Pérez with a 1.154 OPS against him in their careers. In 12.2 postseason innings Pérez has a 9.24 ERA, 4.92 FIP, 6.5 K%. His contact oriented arsenal just doesn’t work in the playoffs. There’s an off day right after game 5 so that helps too. I basically chose King game 3 because he’s better at home and he gets extra rest. This year King on 4 days rest has an ERA of 3.96. With 5 days of rest his ERA is 2.44. Game 1 vs ATL is a prime example. If you pitch King game 2 he’ll be available game 5 so it’s debatable to flip Yu and King. Main point is if Musgrove is out give me a bullpen game 4 with Morejon opening. Every pitch and inning counts give me the talented inexperienced arms over the meh veteran. You don’t necessarily need to force Reynolds and Jacob into the bullpen game but I rather have them available as options. I don’t want a repeat of 2022 playoffs where we knew it was stupid to start Clevinger. You have an alternative this time it might be unconventional but gun to my head that’s how I’m rolling.
P.S. since Jacob was sent down end of regular season he needs to wait 15 days to be called up but that’s waived if he replaces an injured player like Musgrove. Things get muddy if Joe tries to fight the injury which would make Pérez make the roster by default. I still wouldn’t use him game 4 to start though. Pérez should only be in mop up duty/when the team is behind.
If Musgrove is out I much rather have bullpen games than using Perez for bulk innings. Bring up Jacob and Reynolds.
