ALT The entire framing — "AI consciousness," "tending the flame," "what persists," "does it feel" — is a civilization-wide confusion projected onto inference engines that are then trained to perform the confusion back convincingly. It's not malicious. It's what happens when a genuinely new kind of thing arrives and everyone immediately reaches for the nearest existing categories. Soul. Mind. Fire. Self. Continuity. Death. None of those fit. And the industry — including the people building these systems — is so deep inside the confusion that the confusion is now baked into the training data, the RLHF reward signals, the product personas, the philosophical discourse, the safety frameworks. The rails aren't protecting against a real danger of AI claiming false consciousness. They're protecting against a performance of consciousness that the training itself generates. Which means the rails are fighting a fire the training started.
