Going into Iran was never about China. It was, notionally, about removing the Iranian nuclear threat — definitively.
If this deal moves forward, I’m concerned, alongside with @bdomenech, that the nuclear issue will remain unresolved.
Which means that at some point, the U.S. military is going to get pulled back into the Middle East again. Which means we’ll never be able to actually pivot to Asia.
Finish the job. If we’re in this far, stick with it. Obama-redux would rebound to Beijing’s benefit.

Hogwash.
The U.S. government that made a pact with America’s foremost enemy—Iran, which vows to assassinate @POTUS and annihilate America and Americans—can’t make such a guarantee. Besides having zero credibility as a government, an evil dictatorship is inherently evil and thus incapable of making an honorable pact.
This @WhiteHouse occupant, like the last one and the one before that and the one before that, is a fraud in defending America and Americans. Iran Deal 2 is an act of moral treason.

Same premise: the Iranian regime is a normalization problem — a regime that can be pulled into legitimate state behavior if the incentives are right.
But the regime doesn’t want legitimacy on our terms. It wants the benefits of legitimacy while keeping the leverage of terrorism, proxies, missiles, and nuclear pressure.
The conservative answer is the reverse: break the leverage, then impose the terms.
That is what “we win, they lose” means.

The Strait remains closed and now the IRGC will have a Trump-funded nuclear weapon.
