Do y'all not reread your own fics? Like I reread shit I wrote all the time. Cause I wrote that shit for me. I think when we say we write for ourselves, it really means, we wrote things without the worry of "Is this a popular trope, will this go viral, is it trendy"

That's why when I like a ship I go to their last page on ao3 and start reading from there
my contribution to the fic writer discussion is that i wish there was more love for fic long after its initially posted. im always so grateful when i post a fic and it gets immediate attention but after that first week it feels like it just kind of disappears into the ether

becoming distant with everyone cause on a random day it hit me that people really don’t care for me like I care for them

I’m so embarrassed by all the pathetic and desperate shit I’ve done in an attempt to feel loved, and I’m more embarrassed that nothing has ever worked.

i think one of the most crazy revelations i had during the last 4 years of this war is that literally nothing stops even when you are being bombed like wym i could die this night and house where i live was shaking because of the explosions but i have uni assignment due at 1 PM

people are allowed to be disappointed when they don't get much response to something they worked hard on regardless of what it is just bc it's a hobby doesn't mean you're not allowed to be upset by it and it doesn't mean you're just looking to go viral or get a bunch of hits

500 kudos is low? bro, that's wild. I read fics with like 2 kudos and i'm kudos number 3 bc they are amazing. i do not trust the opinion of the masses. kudos tell me nothing about whether i will like a fic. Summary and tags are all I need.
this is so true. some of my favourite fics have less than 1k kudos (some less than 500) and a lot of people won't give them a chance just because they see the "low" number and think it's not worth it.

i wanted to add to this because of the “write for you” discourse today the thing is, most writers DO write for themselves, i know i do. but we PUBLISH to platforms like ao3 for the community. we don’t publish for ourselves, that’s for other fans.
this ravenous consumption without community is also why authors are leaving the fanbase lol you can only write so fast and create so much, and when people don’t care about you or your work outside of the speed they can consume it, it ends up draining your passion to write

I hate when people say "write for yourself" after people express disappointment in lack of comments or kudos. You can write all of the fics you want but your motivation will start to dwindle if nobody interacts with your stuff. It's disheartening. We aren't machines.

This is what happens when readers don't go through the wattpad and ffnet rite of passage and jump straight to ao3. Wattpad writers used to hold chapters hostage until they received a particular amount of votes and comments and readers developing fandom etiquette as we know today
I wouldn't consider myself a longfic writer, I mostly do oneshots, but just from being around for a decade (christ) on ao3, the trends I've noticed are 1. readers these days don't leave comments on unfinished fics, leading to lower motivation for writers to continue them (1/4)

the advice to "write for yourself" is getting bastardized and/or misinterpreted to mean "do not ever express disappointment if a piece you worked hard on does not find its audience," but what it actually means is "only dedicate time & effort to ideas that excite you"
