very helpful suggestions for PhD students who need to work at home by @ZJAyres . To add: consider a course in e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Indesign.

3/ My preference would be the US. I have experience from UK and US now - I found the US Ph.D. system much more holistic. Even better - many top tier biology departments in the US, GRE is optional. Here's a curated list of such institutions - docs.google.com/spreadsheets…

Mental health during your #PhD! This should be in every lab, university, library, etc, and also be given by default to every supervisor. Some of our work is resource management and we must remember that *people* are our most valuable resource. @AcademicChatter @firstphdchat

Please do not fall prey to the idea that any activity that does not measurably advance your career is somehow necessarily harming it. You have only this one beautiful life; do not avoid living it for fear that your total productive output might be less than the theoretical max.

Anyone doing your PhD or any other academic document: if you make an account with @Wikipedia then go to Sandbox & then Cite you can literally just copy URLs or book titles or DOIs in there & it generates a full reference! I could have saved days of my life... #phdchat #phdlife
