I don't have #mapsathome on my walls, so I thought about reviewing some of my favourite cartography books #cartobooks while in lockdown. These would be some candidates from my personal library. What ya think?

(I am planning to disseminate some of the results in short form here eventually, for now I need a few days rest and sort out some remaining admin issues. For now, you can find the abstract of my thesis here: tuwien.at/fileadmin/Assets/t… )

This is indeed a problem

Most new scientific projects barely move the needle forward on knowledge, but we have to pretend that they are world-changing stuff or no one will give us money And thus, most grants are deeply, deeply silly
I wonder why academics are so surprised by the current political climate. Every academic who has had a few papers reviewed is well aware of the phenomenon of the self-confident, "well-informed" idiot.

From a time when cartographers hacked their university's (text-only) printer to give them more shades of grey:
My first computer map was done in Symap, run on an IBM mainframe from a card deck and printed on the computer center line printer. This is my 2nd run the same week; I don’t have the choropleth version any more.

Musings on the misleading semantics of the phrase "no evidence", and possible alternatives to use for communicating scientific (non-)results to a wider audience. Great read! by @slatestarcodex /cc @florianaigner astralcodexten.substack.com/…

Scale bars on a map of Italy from 1793. Each province had its own system for measuring distances! Praise the metric system 🙏📏📐 #icc2021

I am seeing more and more presentations using small font sizes at scientific conferences. Please 🙏 don't do this! There are people in the back of the room, too! #icc2021

Not too shabby a location for the opening ceremony of #ICC2021 at Palazzo Veccio, Firenze.

I thought I know a bit about computing history, but: WTF?!?
Once the Apollo code was ready, it was physically woven into core rope modules. These modules were ROM storage; a wire went through a core for a 1 bit or around for a 0 bit. The video shows women putting wires through the cores. Each module stored 6 kilowords.
