Stoner developed the Stoner 86 (also known as the ARES LMG-1), a lightweight 5.56mm belt-fed/machine gun at ARES Inc. It was an advanced evolution of his earlier Stoner 63 system, optimized as a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) that could accept both belts and STANAG magazines.

Here is an excerpt from the article - Tiger Stripe Camo: How a Lizard Became a Legend: “In First Blood, John Rambo (played by Sylvester Stallone) is seen wearing an OG 107 M-65 jacket and not a Tiger Stripe camo jacket, even though his character was a Green Beret Medic. His knife was the now famous Jimmy Lile classic survival style Bowie Knife. Undoubtedly the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife claims the top podium position as the most iconic fighting knife. However during WWII it ran into design flaws or more accurately it encountered situations the design of the knife was not intended for. Even in its intended role of pure knife combat there were still notable flaws. Post WWII Col. Rex Applegate a legendary wartime OSS hero and highly acclaimed combatives instructor collaborated with William Fairbairn his mentor to create a solution addressing many if not all of the Fairbairn-Sykes design flaws. The improved design known as the Applegate-Fairbairn A-F Fighting Knife featured a wider thicker less tapered blade geometry for superior strength and durability. This allowed for sharper more acute dual edges while retaining thrusting power and improving cutting slashing performance. A reinforced full tang construction eliminated the breakage risk at the blade tang junction that plagued some F-S examples. The handle ditched the classic Coke shaped round grip for an ergonomic oval cross section that provided better security and intuitive blade orientation crucial in dark or chaotic fights. Another notable addition was the more pronounced saber type guard for enhanced hand protection and control. The features and changes are numerous and deserve a longer article to cover fully. One particularly interesting contrast was the different approaches to blade finishes on early iterations of the F-S Pattern 1 knife versus the A-F. Fairbairn & Sykes wanted a highly polished mirror like blade they believed the flashing gleam when wielded rapidly would intimidate an opponent psychologically in a knife fight. Rex Applegate however prioritized the element of surprise above all. He insisted on a matte non reflective finish to eliminate any telltale glint that could betray position in low light ops. This mattered so much to him that he reportedly canceled contracts with manufacturers like Al Mar Knives and Blackjack Knives when their production failed to comply with his strict recommendations including on blade finish. #RexApplegate #ApplegateFairbairn #FixedBlade
