The decline of shared standards of taste in the arts has not, contrary to expectation, resulted in a new freedom to "like whatever you like" but rather a strong tendency for people to admire only what others already admire. Absent shared standards, there is only hype.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to young writers, or to anyone really, is to firmly shrug off the well-meaning expectations of good people.
You know how to reject the bad. It is rejecting the “good”—when that good wishes you to be nice, tame, or easy—that is hard.
