I think both sides are being socialized into modern flirting and dating wrong.
And often the focus is on the man to approach. But are women being taught how to receive an approach at all? Like does your mom tell you not to be unnecessarily cruel in rejecting advances?

For low status women, it's tempting to defect, and sacrifice a bit of high trust for personal status gain.
The moment there's a critical disrespect ratio, however, respectful guys with high odds of getting rejected won't attempt. So, only confident or psychopathic men approach.
