Living legend John Scofield.
To see a master I may never see again, I started my day early. Despite his frequent performances in Korea, I always missed the golden opportunities due to work.
I usually enjoy concerts near the FOH(Front Of House) for the best sound balance. But, seeing only two overhead mics for the drums, plus mics on the kick and snare during rehearsal, I chose a spot close to the stage to get the raw drum sound. Couldn't stand the excessive bass and treble from the line array speakers.
Before the show, I watched him rehearse, check amp sounds, and interact with the staff, trying not to miss a moment. His steps reflected the years, which made me a bit sad and worried. But once the show began, his energy overwhelmed me.
His seasoned technique, unique laid-back groove, and expressive performance were unmatched. His overwhelming aura filled the venue. Though standing for the entire set seemed tough, he alternated between sitting and standing. I felt grateful to see him still perform standing.
Drummer Bill Stewart's perfectly timed snare hits were also mesmerizing. After the setlist, they briefly left the stage but returned for an encore due to the audience's request, playing a piece by the late Carla Bley.
This magical 80-minute show will stay with me forever. I may never see him again, but today I fulfilled a lifelong dream. Deep thanks to Seoul Jazz Festival 2024 for an incredible performance.
Stay healthy and keep playing great music for many more years.
