One thing I find weirdly counterintuitive about astronomy: stars are impossibly lonely, but galaxies are practically neighbours.
If the Sun were a basketball in London, the nearest star would be in Delhi.
If the Milky Way were a dinner plate, Andromeda would be across the room.

Halloween on South Uist, 1932 looked pretty terrifying. Children made homemade costumes from sheepskins, haystack wigs, scraped-out skulls and sheep ears! One boy spent an entire day peeling the skin from a sheep skull to make his mask!

Alarmed by what I'm seeing in the US. I was once pretty confident Biden would win. I'm now pretty confident of the opposite. The consequences are too terrible to contemplate. Most importantly: Putin triumphant in Ukraine. And then the horror of what follows from that fact.

Sad to hear of Bernard Hill's passing. What a rich legacy he leaves... 'Boys from the Blackstuff' was my first political awakening. He played fantastic flawed Dads in the brilliant 'Restless Natives' and 'Shirley Valentine', and lifted the whole LOTR saga. A magnificent actor.
