Mid 19c Irish barristers, particularly on the Connaught Circuit, still continued to challenge one another to duels when 'anger or resentment or real or fancied insult blinded their judgment.' However, as the risk of prosecution for the survivor increased, so did the likelihood of these challenges ending peaceably.
