THE LAST DAY is a striking directorial debut from Rachel Rose, who adapts “Mrs. Dalloway” through a contemporary lens of motherhood to tell a haunting and devastating story. Alicia Vikander gives one of her better performances in recent memory, while Wagner Moura and Maren Ireland leave a lasting impression with just a single scene each. I only wish the film found a better balance between Vikander’s storyline and Victoria Pedretti’s as it feels more focused on the former. Beautifully shot and confidently directed, the film’s structure and deliberate pacing can occasionally be frustrating, but it’s definitely an impressive directorial debut for Rose, making her a new talent to watch out for.
