There's a falcon the size of a robin that'll hunt your yard for free. And you can build it a house this weekend. The American kestrel hovers over open ground and drops on grasshoppers, voles, and mice all day. It's the most widespread falcon in North America, found in nearly every state, and it's down by roughly half since the 1960s. The reason is fixable: kestrels nest in tree holes they can't dig themselves, and we keep cutting down the dead trees that hold them. No cavity, no nest. So give them one. The whole box comes out of a single 8-foot 1x10. A 7¾-inch floor, a body about a foot and a half tall with a sloped roof you hinge at the top for cleaning, a 3-inch round hole up near the front, and 3 inches of wood chips in the bottom, since they bring no nesting material of their own. White pine, an afternoon, about twenty bucks. Hang it 10 to 20 feet up on a pole or a dead tree at the edge of a field, pasture, or big open lawn, with the hole facing the open ground and pointed south or east. Put a baffle on the pole so raccoons can't climb to it.

BREAKING: DHS just waived all environmental laws to blast border barriers and roads through Big Bend National Park. This marks the first time in American history the feds have gutted dozens of laws to push industrial-level construction through a national park.

The Nashville Zoo has launched a public campaign to block construction of a proposed 69,000-square-foot AI data center that would sit directly adjacent to habitats for endangered animals, including vulnerable clouded leopards. Zoo officials warn that the facility’s constant noise, bright artificial lighting, and electrical hum could seriously disrupt animal behavior, stress levels, and long-established breeding programs. The zoo is home to more than 3,700 animals representing over 350 species and maintains one of the most important collections of rare and endangered wildlife in the United States. This conflict highlights a growing backlash against the rapid expansion of data centers driven by the AI boom. These facilities require massive amounts of electricity and operate 24 hours a day, prompting communities nationwide to raise concerns about energy consumption, water use, noise pollution, and environmental impacts. Wildlife conservation groups are now joining the resistance. More than 180,000 people have already signed a petition opposing the project. The developer behind the data center states that it will use waterless cooling systems, meet all local noise regulations, and comply with environmental standards. However, zoo leaders argue that the location itself, immediately next to sensitive animal habitats, makes the project unacceptable regardless of technical mitigations. The dispute underscores a broader challenge of the AI era: how to build the vast digital infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence without placing undue pressure on local communities, ecosystems, and wildlife.

The federal government just banned bison from public land in Montana. Not cattle. Bison. Interior Secretary Burgum revoked grazing permits for 950 bison on 63,000 acres of federal land in northeastern Montana. The reason? Bison raised for conservation don't count as livestock under a 1934 law. Bison raised for meat and milk? Fine. Bison raised to restore a native species to its native land? Get out. Meanwhile, cattle ranchers across the West keep grazing on your land. For $1.69 a month. One cow. One calf. Thirty days. $1.69. On land that belongs to every American. The Cheyenne River Sioux. The Coalition of Large Tribes — 50 Native nations. Defenders of Wildlife. They all filed formal protests. They called it exactly what it is. "DEI for cows." The bison have until September 30 to be gone. Who decided cattle belong on public land more than bison do? #DemsUnited

People have no idea how much work goes into writing a book. Months, sometimes years, of thinking, rewriting, doubting, & starting over. If a book moved you, show it. Rate it. Write a review. Share it. Recommend it. And if you can, buy it.

The American people should charge Trump $400,000,000 to restore the white house since he demolished it without approval.

Tim Wong noticed the California pipevine swallowtail butterfly had nearly vanished from San Francisco. So he did something about it. He tracked down the one plant the caterpillars can eat — the California pipevine — got cuttings from the botanical garden, and built a backyard enclosure from scratch. He started with 20 caterpillars and has now raised thousands. Every year since 2012 more butterflies have been spotted flying free in San Francisco. Conservation doesn't require a big organization. It can start in your backyard too. Planting the right native host plants (even in a pot or small patch) is one of the simplest ways to help butterflies like this. What's one native plant you're growing this spring?

Update from Maya's father: Yesterday was a big day for us. We transitioned out of the ICU into a more recovery and rehab-focused unit, and it’s now been 26 hours since Maya’s EVD was removed for the second time. So far, everything is looking positive. She doesn’t seem to be in as much pain, and we’re starting to see a little more energy and color come back. She’s still not a fan of the boot for the pressure sore on her heel doing her best to kick it off whenever she can but her movements are becoming much more intentional. Our time in the PICU, for lack of a better word, has been a whirlwind filled with both highs and lows for Maya, but slowly we're making some more progress. And then came a moment today that completely overwhelmed me. OT and Physio came in, and with their help, Maya was able to sit up on the edge of the bed. This was huge for two reasons. First, she was using her own muscles to help support herself (with assistance), and second… I was finally able to wrap my arms around my daughter. Really wrap my arms around her and hold her tight. I can’t even begin to put into words what that hug felt like. All I wanted in that moment was to lift her up, hold her close, and never let go. We’re getting there, Dads little Maya Bear 🐻 I love you so much ❤️

This is terrible and unnecessary. Along with @NRDems I will pursue every legislative avenue to reverse this decision.

#EndangeredSpeciesAct The Trump administration hates life. Their every act is the end the world, end the beautiful, end the innocence, end the just, and end the future. Since they won't live to see it--neither should our children, or the miracles the sea. #bigoil
