Democracy is facing its most dangerous moment since the early years of WW2. In fact, I would argue it is a more dangerous moment because the bastion of democracy, the USA, is teetering between democracy and dictatorship.
If Trump wins and Russia prevails in Ukraine, it will, in all probability, mark the beginning of the end of democracy, not just in the USA but around the world. It will be very likely that today's children will live to see a world in which democracy, freedom and human rights are but fading memories, and humanity will once again have sunk into the long darkness of brutal despotism which is the historical norm.
Never assume that democracy is the norm or the inevitable consequence of progress. The historical norm is despotism. Democracy is an aberration from that norm. Every generation must fight to enjoy the rare privilege of democracy, and today, the internal and external enemies of democracy have more power than at any time since the early years of WW2.
In WW2, the authoritarian powers were divided between fascism and communism. Now, all of them are kleptofascist, uniting kleptocratic greed and fascist authoritarianism. In the Cold War communism had no appeal to the super-rich, but kleptofascism is exactly what the likes of Musk, Sacks, Thiel, Mercer, Koch, Leo, and Murdoch yearn for.
The future of humanity hangs in the balance. The responsibility for what happens next rests on our shoulders.
If democracy triumphs on November 5th and if Ukraine defeats Russia, it will be a crushing defeat for the kleptofascist axis. Democracy, freedom, and human rights will be on the march again. There will be a long struggle ahead, but we will, once again, be able to look forward with hope. If we fail, the darkness will descend, not immediately, but inevitably.
