Remember, ending air-defense aid to Ukraine is JD Vance's proudest accomplishments as Vice President.

Council houses aren't 'taxpayer-supported housing'. They are tangible assets for local authorities, paid for many times over by decades of rental income. Tell me I'm wrong.

On the 80th anniversary Frederick Taylorโ€™s book remains probably the best account of the raids, setting them in context in a very balanced way @fredvallier

Friends, For the last week, my and many other pro-Ukrainian accounts have been attacked by bots. Probably Russian, because they contain names written in Cyrillic. Their goal is clear โ€“ to make the voice of Ukraine weak and hardly noticeable. Therefore, each of your shares, likes, and reactions will is a great favor and a boost for pro-Ukrainian accounts. I am grateful to everyone who, despite all the turbulence and challenges, stays with us, helps and supports us. Thank you!๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

OTD - 1940 - the bombing of Coventry by Hitlerโ€™s Luftwaffe. @fredvallier wrote the most informed examination of the bombing, highly recommended as also his book on Dresden.

Democracy is facing its most dangerous moment since the early years of WW2. In fact, I would argue it is a more dangerous moment because the bastion of democracy, the USA, is teetering between democracy and dictatorship. If Trump wins and Russia prevails in Ukraine, it will, in all probability, mark the beginning of the end of democracy, not just in the USA but around the world. It will be very likely that today's children will live to see a world in which democracy, freedom and human rights are but fading memories, and humanity will once again have sunk into the long darkness of brutal despotism which is the historical norm. Never assume that democracy is the norm or the inevitable consequence of progress. The historical norm is despotism. Democracy is an aberration from that norm. Every generation must fight to enjoy the rare privilege of democracy, and today, the internal and external enemies of democracy have more power than at any time since the early years of WW2. In WW2, the authoritarian powers were divided between fascism and communism. Now, all of them are kleptofascist, uniting kleptocratic greed and fascist authoritarianism. In the Cold War communism had no appeal to the super-rich, but kleptofascism is exactly what the likes of Musk, Sacks, Thiel, Mercer, Koch, Leo, and Murdoch yearn for. The future of humanity hangs in the balance. The responsibility for what happens next rests on our shoulders. If democracy triumphs on November 5th and if Ukraine defeats Russia, it will be a crushing defeat for the kleptofascist axis. Democracy, freedom, and human rights will be on the march again. There will be a long struggle ahead, but we will, once again, be able to look forward with hope. If we fail, the darkness will descend, not immediately, but inevitably.

Finished THE WEIMAR YEARS by @FXMC1957. Terrific. A telling, timely account of a democracy doomed to self-destruction, informed by an icy instinct for how power is gained and lost. Admirers of his fine book on the Gestapo and his magisterial HITLER YEARS will not be disappointed.

Just heard the Home Secretary stand up in Parliament and declare that "the British people support the Rwanda plan". I'm sick of these guys telling me what I support. I do not support the "Rwanda plan". If you don't either, please retweet.

It's 2023, 109 years after WW1 started, yet the pre-WW1 imperial borders are still visible on the election map of Poland - and on many others, for that matter. A thread ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿงต๐Ÿงต-->

Double treats. First arrival is The Forgers, latest from @Roger_Moorhouse, which looks well up to his usual sky-high standard. Second due soon will be The Weimar Years from @FXMC1957, which Iโ€™m sure will match his excellent 2-vol The Hitler Years. Gentlemen, you are spoIling us!

What's happening in Russia is momentous, but there's a much bigger threat to the world than Putin. Worth remembering that the Russian kleptocracy derives its wealth & power from the same fossil fuels that are destroying the climate system.
New 2023 World highest temperature was set yesterday in Iran: 51.8C at Shahdad ,Kerman Province, in the Dash-el-Lut desert. Next days more countries can reach 50C in the Middle East and possibly Mexico. Stay tuned.
