RBZ Cuts Policy Rate to 30% The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has reduced the Bank Policy Rate from 35% to 30%, marking an important shift in monetary policy. 🎙️Back in our February episode reviewing the Monetary Policy Statement, @baba_nyenyedzi, @dziya_mya and @rufarogz unpacked the RBZ's decision to maintain the policy rate at 35%. At the time, @baba_nyenyedzi argued that keeping the rate at 35% was a deliberate move to control money supply, preserve stability, and support confidence in the economy. Money supply growth is 43% as of March. We understand April was worse. ZiG money expansion in March yoy was 55%. It makes no sense for the MPC to reduce policy rate to 30%. A lot is being done to manage liquidity with NNCD’s at near zero % but not much is being done to manage money expansion.

Friday drinks at 3pm Is colonizing Mars a worthy human pursuit? The markets seem to think so as they back SpaceX. Is this 21st century colonialism? GoZ to introduce a local content ACT to curb the importation of certain imports. Wise move?

I would like Cabinet, Parliament and council to sit with this photograph for an afternoon. In fact, every high school teacher, whatever the subject, should ask students to write an essay on what they see here. The answers would probably take us closer to the solution to Zimbabwe’s problems than most policy papers. Every boardroom should spend time with it too. For good measure, the Zimra board should take it on a weekend retreat and ask its economists to calculate how much OK has paid in taxes over the past decade. Then they should look again at the pavement outside. I am keeping this photograph for my book.
