When Notre-Dame burned in 2019, the world stopped. Today, Russia damages Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a monastery nearly 1,000 years old and older than Notre-Dame itself. A thousand years of history deserves the same attention, the same sympathy, and the same protection.

UNESCO has now issued a statement, without directly assigning blame to Russia though.
As Director-General of UNESCO, Khaled El-Enany has not issued an official, standalone quote or statement directly condemning Russia. Will he do it now? Ever? Drop him a line @UNESCO_DG

A strike on the Lavra is like a strike on Notre-Dame “Last night, Russia once again demonstrated its brutality by launching a massive attack on Kyiv and causing extremely serious damage to the Assumption Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site,” said Jean-Noël Barrot. “For us French people, this is equivalent to the bombing of Notre-Dame de Paris or the Basilica of Saint-Denis,” he added.

The Dovzhenko film studio in Kyiv is one of the oldest centers of world cinema. Established in 1927, it’s where Dziga Vertov, Sergey Paradzhanov and obviously Oleksandr Dovzhenko shot some of their masterpieces. It survived WWII because its collection was evacuated to Central Asia before the Nazi takeover. This morning, it was hit by Russian missiles. The entire collection of 100,000 costumes going back nearly a century burned down. Other priceless artifacts gone, too. Barbarians sacking Europe’s cultural heritage.

The bells of the Lavra rang like this when the Mongols invaded and sacked Kyiv in 1240.
The bells of the Lavra rang out across Kyiv after Russia’s massive attack on the capital. A sound of faith, resilience, and survival above a city that endured another night of terror.

Qui peut encore croire Poutine qui prétend défendre les valeurs chrétiennes contre un occident qu il qualifie de depravé ? Cathédrale de Kiev ravagée par un drone russe. Je m’y étais rendu, il y a un mois.

#Kyiv 😢😢😢😢
I cannot believe what I’m witnessing in Kyiv tonight. Priests at the Kyiv Lavra one of the holiest Christian sites in Europe are rushing to save crucifixes, icons and sacred artefacts while Russia attacks the city. This is what Moscow’s “Christian values” look like.

'Mega-Monday' 🇪🇺 #enlargement
Today is Mega-Monday for EU enlargement. First, Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since the decision to start EU accession negotiations in 2023. We will also close two more chapters with Montenegro, bringing it close to half of all chapters closed. It’s a day to celebrate. I’ll also use today to urge candidates to continue the pace of reforms. My doorstep ahead of the FAC ⤵️ newsroom.consilium.europa.eu…

Russia bombed the Kyiv Lavra — the holiest Orthodox site in Eastern Europe — and, among other targets, Ukraine’s main cinema studio. After his long conversation with Trump yesterday, Putin was confident he can launch a war of extermination on Ukrainian culture and national heritage.
