A full life is a gift. A career in golf is a privilege. Having my story told is a humbling honour. My heart is full—full of gratitude for those who brought this documentary to life and full of love for the people who made the journey so extraordinary. You start out just wanting to win that first tournament. Then one day, you look back and realize the journey of a champion became something far greater than trophies or titles. This is my story… of how a young boy from Africa dared to conquer the world.

When I designed Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, my goal was to create a golf course that looked as though nature had designed it herself. The site is one of the most spectacular pieces of coastline I have ever had the privilege to work with, featuring pristine beaches, rolling dunes, and magnificent views of the Arabian Gulf. Rather than force a golf course onto the land, we allowed the natural contours and environment to guide the design, creating a layout that is both visually stunning and strategically rewarding. Great golf courses challenge a player’s mind as much as their swing, and that philosophy is evident throughout Saadiyat Beach. While golfers are treated to breathtaking ocean views on many holes, they must also contend with the coastal winds, carefully positioned bunkers, and greens that demand thoughtful approach shots.

Like Aronimink, Philadelphia is a spectacular city for American golf. Union League Liberty Hill is a wonderful example of thoughtful design meeting natural beauty. Every hole was crafted to work with the landscape creating a course that is both visually stunning and strategically engaging. Great design is not about making a course difficult for the sake of it. It is about offering choices. Angles into greens, positioning from the tee, and subtle contours that reward the well-played shot. I have always believed that a golf course should challenge the mind as much as the swing. My hope is to design a course that when you leave a round having been tested, inspired, and eager to return. Aronimink is one of the truly great championship golf courses in the world, and the condition of the course, the incredible galleries, and the hospitality of the club made the PGA Championship an unforgettable week. I have always believed the PGA Championship stands for the club professional, and as a former president of the PGA in South Africa, I deeply admire how this championship continues to honour the men and women who dedicate their lives to growing the game and serving their communities. Aaron Rai was every bit the gentleman and champion you hope to see win a major championship, and the magnificent putt he holed on the 17th green, a putt I honestly felt would have been difficult to two-putt, was one of the finest moments of the week. To then see the way he embraced his wife, with such genuine love, humility, and gratitude, reminded me that success in golf comes from a deep passion for the game and an unwavering commitment to hard work, and all in all, it was a magnificent championship at a magnificent club. The last (and only other) time the PGA was played at Aronimink was 1962 and @garyplayer hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy. It’s one of his nine majors, part of a year that the majors were all claimed by the Big 3. Remembering the Black Knight’s major moment: golfweek.usatoday.com/story/…

I fortuitously missed the cut at the Open in 1962 as it humbled me and allowed me to head to Aronimink with a new hunger to bounce back. It was a pleasure competing with my friend Bob Goalby. A special memory.  I am blessed to have been a PGA Champion at Aronimink in a city and place that I enjoy so much. I hope it is a great week for all involved.
