Member of the House of Lords, NED, Chairman of a couple of things and EX a lot of things. Big fan of Local government and the great people and politicians in it
Not being sighted on actual defence spending plans, I cant hand on heart say they are right or not.But having loosely spent time over the last 20 years politicly in the same space (not tribally) as @JohnHealey_MP I can say he is an honest, decent man and caring MP.
Why do you think this? We already have hundreds of examples of how this failed ( for the tax payer) the last time it was tried. PFI schools and hospitals, still wastes billions of tax pounds a year.
This is very welcome news. The Government using Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) is an innovative way of increasing investment in public infrastructure when direct state expenditure has to be lowered.
Expanding them will release more capital to build public infrastructure.
Important, however, to strengthen contracts relative to PFI deals by:
- Increasing threshold for evidence of returns from investment
- Diversifying investors in each deal
- Applying a strict ceiling on total debt interest
Congratulations, always good to see ministerial appointments that recognise the skills and experience of the person being appointed. You were good at LGA and im sure you will also be good in and for the dept
It is an honour to accept the appointment as the Minister for Housing, Communities, and Local Government.
I will work tirelessly to deliver the government’s agenda and will continue to represent my constituents in #Barking & Dagenham.
ALT A green graphic announcing Nesil Caliskan MP as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Housing, Communities & Local Government.
obviously Steves politics are slightly misguided from my point of view, But Im in the front of the que to agree that he has been an outstanding council Leader and from outside looking in, run a great council. Should be in next HoL labour cohort.
One of the best council leaders in recent times.
Not for the first or probably last time that excellent local leadership is overlooked and comes to count for very little in local elections.
No Westminster (not the borough) player should be trying to sell the results as good for the Conservatives. There were some great results and a lot of results not as bad as was thought, but the losses were still about 10% higher than was thought. @reformparty_uk had a great result
I am absolutely delighted — & genuinely humbled — to have been re-elected to @hantsconnect to represent Romsey Rural once again.
Thank you to everyone who supported me, voted for me, delivered leaflets, displayed posters, sent kind messages, or simply stopped for a chat
To all the members of @Solace_UK who are returning officers today and all of the brilliant teams working with you, good luck and thank you. The next 24/36 hours are the tip of the iceberg you have been working on to make sure our democracy works in practice not just in words.
Good luck to everyone standing in todays elections, win or lose, its a great thing that you are prepared to put your head above the parapet to represent your community. There are lots of people with opinion and attitude, but far fewer with the courage to put them to the test.
The PRS is on its knees now, and thats costing everyone who pays tax more to cover the homeless budget and god knows how much more to undo the damage to the kids in BandBs. If she was crazy enough to do this, tens of thousands more people will be evicted as the landlords sell up.
One of the dangers of the NATO members refusing to protect the oil routes is that the biggest losers from the potential US destruction of the terminals besides the IRGC and the regime is China, If they send their navy in, this mess takes on a whole new dimension
Sad to hear of the passing of Phil Woolas, he was one of the first national politicians I engaged seriously with after I realised London (through Westminster and Whitehall)would make a bigger difference to the lives of the people in South Holland than we could alone on the ground
It was so lovely to get the A-Team back together last night.
These amazing colleagues achieved so much for local government when we worked together at @LGAcomms
Great to see you @DennisSkinner2, Sally Burlington, Nicky Old, Claire Holloway, @SJPickup and Ian Hughes.
I was lucky enough to do nearly 22 years in front line politics (until the electorate said bugger off in 2023) and I was lucky enough to Lear an important lesson quickly. If you want to win most of the time, you have to learn how to lose some of the time
Just to let everyone ( I mean everyone) know who dosnt get a Xmas card this year from me, it dosnt mean we have fallen out. Im not doing them again this year and will be making a donation to @WaterAidUK and @BritishHeart_IM instead.
Got some really sad news to share with my friends in and around South Holland, Howard Johnson (a long standing ex member of my ex cabinet ) passed away last night, at least it was peacefully in a chair at home watching the TV.
Anyone introducing the tax, should first have a look at the impact it has on the tips received by the hardworking staff in the service sectors that make tourism a viable business in some places in the first place, just been somewhere where the staff took the brunt of the cost.
BREAKING: Labour Devolution minister Miatta Fahnbulleh says the Housing Department is pushing for tourist taxes and ‘putting a very good case … They’re not going to get a rejection from MHCLG. It’s a question of persuading the Treasury’ (@GuidoFawkes) order-order.com/2025/09/29/e…

On the basis that they cant do train tracks well, who in their right mind thinks they have the skills needed to be a multi site developer. Make them transfer the land holdings to the LAs where it is and hope they bring forward the homes that we need.
