Today, 11th June, marks the anniversary of the Battle of Mount Harriet during the Falklands War.
On the night of 11–12 June 1982, 42 Commando Royal Marines launched a ferocious night assault against heavily defended Argentine positions on Mount Harriet, one of the key heights protecting Port Stanley. After days of reconnaissance and careful planning, the Royal Marines approached from an unexpected direction across difficult rocky ground. Supported by artillery and naval gunfire, they closed with the enemy in darkness and fought with aggression and determination through a stubborn defence.
By dawn, Mount Harriet was in British hands. Hundreds of Argentine troops were captured and one of the most important objectives of the campaign had been secured. The battle helped open the road to Port Stanley and played a major role in the final British victory in the Falklands.
A superb example of skill, courage, aggression and professionalism under fire. One of the finest actions in Royal Marines history. 🏴 🇬🇧
