If the
@ChicagoBears want to create the best environment for Caleb Williams or any other rookie QB they draft, they should sign Head Coach Matt Eberflus to an extension through 2027. Then your Head Coach, QB and team can grow together and not look over their shoulders. How do you trade your starting QB, Justin Fields, and NOT GET ANY PICKS THIS YEAR to help Caleb Williams or whoever you draft when your Head Coach’s job is on the line? Poles has done a great job of acquiring talent to improve the roster this offseason, but creating an environment where your rookie QB HAS TO WIN 10 GAMES AND MAKE THE PLAYOFFS to keep from having a 2nd HC, OC and GM in year 2 is not ideal. Coaching matters and by trading Justin Fields and replacing the offensive staff you are saying it was him and them not the Head Coach. If they don’t win now, it’s a disaster. Should have just fired the HC and given your rookie QB a clean slate instead of having your Head Coach fighting for his life on the hot seat. Caleb Williams has the power and if he decides to exercise it that’s his decision. Whether he does or not doesn’t change my opinion on the matter. Whether the Bears draft him or not doesn’t change my opinion on the matter. Whether Bears twitter likes it or not, doesn’t change my analysis and opinion on the matter. The NFL isn’t just about acquiring talent, it’s about establishing the right environment to develop your players. Talent matters, structure matters and coaching matters to QB development. We have to start holding organizations accountable for their poor plans, fits, and development of players ESPECIALLY QBs. Often times players have to overcome the entire organization to be successful and that makes no sense at all. The Bears did not do right by Justin Fields in his 3 years there with and without the current regime. The player acquisitions this offseason say they are ready to build around whoever they draft. If the front office, ownership and the coaches are all in on Caleb Williams they will put him in the best position to be successful. If they aren’t, then using the pick to try to buy more time in their positions is bad for everybody. You can’t be one foot in and one foot out to keep the accountability off of you and then blame the players if it doesn’t work out. Go all in and extend your Coach to show your belief in him. That will send a message to the locker room and be what’s best for your franchise QB as well. That would certainly change my mind on the situation. Otherwise, Caleb Williams should pull an Eli Manning and pick where he wants to go.
