Tsumeshogi problem Goté withdraws his Silver (S-62) to defend the King's position, but does it strengthen the castle? Not really. Find the forced mate, no matter which way the King flees from the first check. lishogi.org/O6N77hbN/sente#1… #shogi

Tsumeshogi problem. Me (goté) set up a mate-in-3 by dropping my lance (L*11) but there was a better move. Why? And what was it? lishogi.org/ctzwYWNk/gote#11… #shogi

Also: "Beware the uchifuzume!" An 'uchifuzume' is when you drop a pawn and that move mates. This is an illegal move in Shogi which causes you to lose the game on the mate. You lose for winning! shogi.pl/level-1-shogi-cours…

A game of Go a day A shout-out for Go World: They display fine art, every magazine-cover. Go World was a labor of love. 3rd IBM Lightning Go Championship, 1990 Kobayashi Satoru (b) v. Ohira Shuzo (author of 'Appreciating Famous Games')

This was a weird game: if either had played better, they would've won. But they didn't so we got this game where both players went in wrong directions and missed decisive blows. If Kato ('the Killer') had played, it would've been game-over for either of them.

A game of Go a day Yu Bin (b) v Yoda Norimoto A very straightforward start with the players taking the star-points then Yoda invading the lower right corner. I mean: this game is indistinguishable from if two 15-kyu were playing. 1992 was a lazy year for Go, I guess.

In China, Fujisawa Shuko's triumph over Kobayashi in the 1992 Oza title (I played through these games earlier) was announced after this game. The standing ovation Shuko got went on and on. Why? I'll read the commentary straight up: [next tweet]

'Song Xuelin interpreted this for a reporter from the Nihon Ki-In Go Weekly: “Shuko sensei is the person who acted as a guide for the Chinese go world. Kobayashi Koichi is like a devil who has done nothing but torment Chinese Go players." Perhaps both have been indispensable.'
