Hello to the 20,000 new accounts who are following my somewhat irreverent World Cup geography takes. Here’s a quiz question to you all to get the braincells going. No googling!

THE SOCCEROOS ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS ... kind of. Australia has claimed the Unofficial World Football Championship with our 2-0 win over Türkiye at the FIFA World Cup. The UFWC tracks back to the first-ever international match in 1872 when England defeated Scotland, with the title changing hands whenever the holder loses a match. Türkiye claimed the title in their win over Kosovo to send them to the World Cup, now forfeiting it to Australia. WE ARE MASSIVE.

Australia has 59,700 kilometres of coastline and every centimetre has been protected by Pat Beach. 🧱🌟 The 22-year-old keeper makes EIGHT saves as the Socceroos open their World Cup with a 2-0 win over Türkiye. GET IN 🇦🇺

🇦🇺😮 Australia cause a big upset at the World Cup, beating heavy favourites Türkiye in Group D. The Socceroos threw themselves in front of everything (registering 12 blocks!) and keeper Patrick Beach had the game of his life on his competitive international debut.

Can’t believe Nestory Irankunda is going to win the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup, that will complement the Socceroos winning the 2026 World Cup perfectly #AUSTUR #FIFAWorldCup

Australia v Türkiye is the World Cup’s only group-stage match where both countries deliberately turned away from their famous coastal cities and made a quieter inland city the capital. Australia chose Canberra. Türkiye chose Ankara. Stay tuned for more cutting-edge, geography-based World Cup analysis.
