I read alt texts from images for you - just mention me in the reply to an image! (alt texts are a cool & accessible way to describe images - see pinned tweet)

For clarification: This bot can only read alt text that has been manually added by the person who tweeted it (here's how to do that: help.twitter.com/en/using-tw…) – if you want to automatically generate a description for an image, I'd recommend @captions_please
Mention me in a tweet with an image or in a reply to a tweet with an image and I will read that image's alt text for you. Alt texts make your tweets more accessible by providing (hidden) image descriptions - here's the official twitter tutorial for that: help.twitter.com/en/using-tw…

This bot will probably stop working next week. It's been a long time coming at this point, but I'm still disappointed. Thanks to everyone who helped make this hellsite more accessible! ❤️
Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead 🧵

Hey @AltTxtReminder! Welcome to the club of accessibility bots that have finally become obsolete!
13 Jul 2022
We’ve been talking about it. You’ve been asking for it. We’ve been working on it. Today, we launched it: the image description reminder! It’s live to 10% of global Twitter across Android, iOS, and Web. 🧵 (1 of 6)

Looks like I finally became obsolete 🥳 I’ll stick around for now, but you should be able to check alt text without me now!

As promised, the ALT badge and exposed image descriptions go global today. Over the past month, we fixed bugs and gathered feedback from the limited release group. We're ready. You're ready. Let's describe our images! Here's how: help.twitter.com/en/using-tw…

Up and running again 🥳 For those who don't know what happened:
25 Mar 2022
PSA: Someone used the bot @get_altText to read out hate speech, which got it blocked from tweeting for a whole week 🙄 I guess I'll use that time to build some sort of language filter.

Do you want your twitter to be an accessible space but sometimes still forget about adding alt text to pictures? @hbeckpdx built this cool bot that will message you if you tweet an image without a description! 😻👇🏻

Sorry everyone, this account got locked because someone asked it to read an alt text with abusive language in it. I'm not sure how to deal with this if it happens more frequently, but for now I deleted the according tweets and the bot should be working again.

The issue has been resolved, so the bot should be working again! 🎉 However, it is no longer allowed to @ mention the original poster of the image when they didn't provide alt text. 😬 It will also no longer send "Sorry, I can't find any images!" to avoid spamming.
Hey everyone, I am currently restricted from answering to tweets. I've contacted Twitter support and am trying to fix this issue, but until then I won't be able to read alt text for you. :( I'll let you know when it's resolved!

twitter finally supports descriptions for gifs! 🎉
31 Jan 2020
Get those GIFs ready. Starting today, when you Tweet from Twitter.com you can add alt text to any GIF just like images. Just make sure you have the "compose image descriptions" setting turned on in your accessibility settings.

ALT Jennifer Lopez giving a standing ovation.

Small update (actually happened a few days ago, but i forgot to announce it) If i can't find any images in the tweet you're replying to, I will now also look at your own tweet and the tweet you're quoting (if there is one).

Also, if I find an image without a description, I will mention the person who posted the pic and send them the link to the official tutorial, so they can add descriptions in the future.

For some reason, Twitter tells me it couldn't find any media for most tweets. I'm going to look into this tomorrow.
