car seats carry flame retardants because US seats must pass a federal burn test (FMVSS 302).
TDCPP, TCEP, Firemaster 550 shed into cabin dust, not fire β kids get the highest dose.
wool passes the same test with none. look for "no added FR chemicals."
cast iron seasoning isn't a coating. it's polymerized oil β fat baked past its smoke point until it cross-links and bonds to the iron. no PTFE, no PFOA, nothing sprayed on.
build it thin. soap won't strip it. only standing water (rust) will. dry it on the burner.
the "new yoga mat smell" is the plasticizer leaving.
cheap mats are PVC β softened with phthalates, stabilized with metals (some carry a Prop 65 warning). bare skin sweat heat = worst-case contact.
swap: natural rubber or cork. TPE if latex-allergic.
"fragrance-free" detergent just means no added scent.
what stays in the fibers is the stuff built to stay: optical brighteners (a UV trick, banned by EPA Safer Choice) quats (dryer-sheet softeners that cling).
want "brightener-free," not just "fragrance-free."
that black spatula is nylon. past ~200Β°C it sheds primary aromatic amines into hot oil β Germany's BfR caps nylon at 15 min in food over 70Β°C.
high-heat sear β wood or stainless. "BPA-free" means nothing on nylon.
"acetone-free" nail remover just means they swapped acetone for ethyl acetate or MEK.
MEK is a CNS depressant. EA is the "fruity" one.
the clean swap is soy or corn ester β Karma Organic, CΓ΄te. smells like oil, not pear.

bamboo cutting boards = dozens of strips bonded with formaldehyde resin (UF / MF). off-gas when wet warm.
label to read: TSCA Title VI or NAF. unlabeled = cheap UF.
swap: solid end-grain hardwood. one piece, no seam.
dark chocolate carries lead cadmium. CR 2022: 23 of 28 bars over California's daily limit per ounce.
cadmium from soil (S. American beans). lead from drying dust (W. African). organic doesn't help.
swap: smaller squares, lower %.
"moisture-wicking" "stay-dry" leggings = usually a PFAS finish.
sweat skin all session β a rain shell. Notre Dame (2024): PFHxA crosses skin at 13.5% in 24h.
look for OEKO-TEX, bluesign, or PFC-free DWR.
IARC groups rate evidence, not danger.
processed meat (G1) β asbestos (G1) in actual risk β same label, different doses.
dose limits live with EPA / EFSA / JECFA. IARC just settles the "is it carcinogenic" question.
play-kitchen receipt pads are usually thermal paper.
BPA or BPS at 1β3% by weight. skin transfer measured in minutes. hand sanitizer pre-wet = ~100x absorption.
swap to printer paper laminate. coin-scratch test for unfamiliar pads.
nylon bristles are fine. the finish isn't.
"polished" / "smooth-glide" toothbrush bristles get a PTFE surface coat. PTFE sits inside the PFAS class (OECD 2021, EPA 2023).
swap: PBT, boar, or castor-oil bioplastic. ask the brand before reorder.
"18/10" = 18% chromium, 10% nickel. SAE 304.
18/8 = same steel, 2% less nickel.
316 = 304 molybdenum. only worth it for brine, ferments, coast.
no SAE number stamped = walk.
your mattress off-gasses for months β formaldehyde, TDCPP, TCEP, residual isocyanates.
CA TB 117 16 CFR 1633 are why the foam is soaked. EU never adopted it.
look for: GreenGuard Gold, wool barrier. air new ones 14 days.
Yuka 0/100. EWG 4. same product. who's right?
Yuka: speed color UI. weakness: no concentration context.
EWG: deep ingredient bios. weakness: 2009 methodology paid badge ("EWG Verified").
read for the rationale, not just the score. the why is the answer.
