Ghost gear #catching ghost gear?! ๐ณ - Day 2 in #Spain was intense! ๐ช
#volunteers retrieved a huge bundle of #ghostgear & it took 6 people three entire hours to separate it๐
This way, we discovered that the bundle contained six different types of #nets of different ages๐ฆ

Today, we retrieved a bundle of 6 different #nets & a broken #crabcage that were lost or #abandoned during 6 different points in time ๐คฏ๐ฆ #Volunteers spent over 3 hrs on this & we're all deeply impressed by the #ghostdiving Spain chapter that encounters things like this often๐ฑ

After #ghostnets are sent up, we need to separate them๐ณWhy? Because #ghostgear can catch ghost gear and we're left with a huge bundle of mixed materials๐งTo be able to re- & upcycle any of it, they need to be sorted manually first ๐ช

After cleaning up 76 tons in 2021, this year we've returned to Ithaca to continue the massive "ghost farm" clean up! ๐ช
We've joined forces with team of #volunteers and #partners and recovered another 25 tons of ghost gear and marine litter together ๐ฑ

Shallow retrieval #missions aren't always easy! ๐
It took 3 dives over several days to recover the whole net from a #reef in the #RedSea ๐ค
It was located directly on the edge of the reef flat to the drop off to deeper waters & completely entangled in #corals! ๐ชธ@healthyseas_org

That means #thousands of hooks can hang from a single line! ๐ฅ
Sharks, albatross, turtles & dolphins can get caught in long lines ๐ฌ
