The Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich has been renamed the Department of Earth and #PlanetarySciences, abbreviated to D-EAPS, effective 1 August. Head of Department Johan Robertsson explains why the renaming was both logical and necessary. 🌍 brnw.ch/21wLHme

When I asked #ChatGPT4 to show a geologist, the hammer selection was fine. But imagine asking for a picture of a female geologist...she doesn't have a hammer, she has a lens. ChatGPT is great in #education to discuss #sterotyps! #teachingidea #teachingtips
I asked chat-gpt to make a photo of a Geologist. Interesting choice of hammer.

#Excursions do not only take place in sunny weather: Biogeoscience field course @ETH_ERDW in the snow at Fluelapass #Davos : nevertheless keep sampling waters and soils for different carbon analyses. Thanks to Kurt, Tim and @FluvialSeds

Every summer, we spend time at #lakelugano in #ticino. But it is the first time we see freshwater #jellyfish. They are not dangerous, but a clear sign that the environment is changing! #climatechange #warming

The change is not only recognizable in #lakelugano, but also in the #mountains. Every summer, we also spend time in the southern Alps at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level. It was the first time we experienced #mosquitos at this elevation! Likely the effect of #warming!

Have you made similar observations this summer? Not only the #glaciers are shrinking dramatically with these high temperatures...

Did my students understand the process of #ripple formation? I asked the students in the exam @ETH_ERDW to complete the following task: Colour all areas in the figure below that were deposited at the same time as the red area! #sedimentstructures @sedimentology @SEPMGEO #icfs23

Let's do some more #LearningAnalytics: In general, students who chose C have a higher final grade in the #sedimentology exam, and hopefully, a better understanding of sedimentological processes. Many students with B seem to do less well and have limited process understanding.

The inspiration for this question came from the figure below; I think I saw it in a blog article once (I can't find it anymore). Original reference? shorturl.at/uELR8 Source of the background image for my question: "Sedimentary structures" by Collinson&Mountney #greatbook

End of the first round of field course I @ETH_ERDW. Discussion of tectonic cross-sections and stratigraphic columns in small groups with a tutor, allowing for an (almost) individual learning experience. I hope there were many enlightening moments. Now, we start the 2nd round...

Looking at deep marine #sediments with @ETH_ERDW students: #turbidite beds in the Schlieren-Flysch in Central Switzerland. In the afternoon, we had a guided tour through the quarry #GuberNaturSteine, Switzerland's largest cobblestone producer! #georesources

Another example from #structuralgeology: Try to translate the following text back into English. What is the meaning of: - Unterhose - Fehler - Fehler rutschgefühl More examples here: wiki.edu.vn/wiki27/2021/06/1…
Turns out google translate sucks at sedimentology...
