Happening in Nanyuki right now. The government has decided that the Ebola facility at Laikipia Airbase is going ahead, whether residents like it or not. Buses are said to have arrived last night, and the crowds out today are massive, even bigger than the Finance Bill maandamano. Nobody can tell who’s who anymore. Are these hired goons brought in to cause chaos, or genuine protesters who travelled to stand with the people of Nanyuki? Nobody knows. What we do know is that the government’s answer to citizens raising grievances has been gunfire. This is what it looks like when a state stops listening.

And this is the playbook going forward. Any protest, any grievance, the response is the same. Bus in the goons, let the looting start, watch the whole thing lose credibility overnight. They tested it after the Finance Bill maandamano and saw that it works. Genuine protesters get drowned out, the cameras capture the chaos instead of the cause, and the government walks away looking like the adult in the room. Expect this every time from now on.
