A few months ago, I committed to making my side projects less functional, more fun and more experimental. Here's a silly web prototype I came up with: Liquid UI.

As an elder millennial who came of age when Google became a verb, I had difficulty grasping that ~40% of Gen Zers use TikTok for search. So I hosted a mini-focus group with Gen Zers to learn more. Here are 3 takeaways:

Is this what people mean when they say "emotional design"? 🥺

The @monzo developer API doesn't support public apps, so Budgee is a cute budget tracker just for me!

Over the past 2 days, I've built Twitter replies into my blog as native, read-only comments. Here's a technical writeup explaining how I approached it, including some React and server code examples. Feedback welcome! grahammacphee.com/writing/tw…

Here's @ylecun in 1993(!) demoing LeNet-1. This was the world's first convolutional neural network for handwriting recognition. Today—29 years later—this same approach powers the majority of computer vision. Such a historical moment, and breakthrough for machine learning.

I had a bit of fun with the GPT-3 AI over the holidays, setting it up to play the TV quiz game "Pointless", and asking it about product design. Very impressed. Here's an "interview" where we discussed some design fundamentals and designing for emotion: grahammacphee.com/writing/gp…

One of the best things I did last year for my work-life balance was recording my weekly priorities. The "week" zoom level made it easy to: ⏬ De-prioritise less important work 💆 Switch off at the end of the day / week

Last year, I made a little app to solve this problem better, with refinements like an easy way to defer tasks for later. After using it every week last year, I'd thoroughly recommend the process if you want to focus on what's most important and be able to switch off from work.

Happy new year, happy new personal website (with a new section to celebrate my own little apps from over the past few years) 😌

I just published a set of cards you can use to critique the design of your app/website: crit.cards/ For me, swiping these cards has been a helpful shortcut to reflect on my design work and iterate. Let me know if you find them useful, and if you'd add anything else!

To me, remote work is liberating because it removes the requirement that I "appear" busy. I can lay on the floor and stare at the ceiling to solve a problem or reset my brain. I don't have to pretend to be looking at an IDE.
