Congratulations to the three teams making their first trip to the boys IHSA state basketball tournament: Byron, Mt. Zion, Palatine, bringing to 429 the number of schools that have made it to state, in all the various formats, dating back to 1908.
Technically, this is Phillips' first Sectional championship. The Wildcats won the Chicago Public League Tournament in 1977, which was the equivalent of a super-sectional under the tournament format at that time.
The longest current streak of consecutive Sectional championships is three in a row by DePaul and Teutopolis. Downers Grove North, Illini Bluffs, Meridian, and New Trier have now won back-to-back Sectional championships.
31 of 32 Illinois boys basketball sectional tournaments have at least one team ranked in the Nestohoops top 25 for each class. Only exception is the Class 2A Beardstown sectional where none of the four teams is ranked by Nesto.
