Deep-sea postdoctoral researcher, expanding the footprint of #eDNA in the deep-sea. Interested in exploring novel methodologies and technological applications
Our #review of the past 10 years of aquatic eDNA is here! We looked at 407 manuscripts and provide:
- 17 key considerations to guide study design and method selection
- a list of 663 PCR primers for aquatic eDNA research (largest to date)

An overview of our recent trip to the Nova-Canton trough where we collected 438 deep-sea eDNA samples. Working with @deepseauwa on these expeditions has been an absolute blast!
Special thanks to the team on board @elinthom & Meg Cundy, Inkfish, and @minderoo
"Ocean Diagnostics is one of my favourite partnerships because of the people as well as the technology. I’m really proud to see the scale and the amount of data that we’ve collected using (Ascension)," says @AyadMarcelle of @minderoo. Read our story at hubs.ly/Q02zLGGy0
Working closely with myself and the @deepseauwa research centre, we are seeking a team player with a passion for marine biology or genetics and strong analytical skills. Research, lab, or sea experience is a plus!
Dive into the deep!🪼 Exciting #PhD opportunity at @deepseauwa and @minderoo for Aus and NZ students! Use #eDNA and other genetic tools to explore biodiversity and investigate trophic relationships in deep-sea environments

Candidate will be supervised by myself, @Hadalbloke and Prof Simon Jarman @CurtinEandA. Based at UWA @BiolSci_UWA in Perth (WA), this project has some amazing field trips exploring the depths of the ocean!
Successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree, honours OR masters degree in a related field (marine or molecular ecology/biology, genetics) and research experience. Spread the word or apply by emailing me at gnester@minderoo.org
To explain my absence on here, I am #PhDone !!! I have officially conferred and begun my new post doc with @minderoo working closely with the @deepseauwa research centre! Looking forward to exploring the #deepsea with #eDNA! Having a blast so far (see cheesy smile below)
My thesis looked at monitoring hard to reach environments (Antarctic open ocean and the deep sea) and threatened species (syngnathids). It’s available to all here espace.curtin.edu.au/handle/…
Super thrilled and proud with where I am! Couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of my supervisors Euan Harvey, Mike Bunce, and @ZoeR_Coral and the amazing @Curtin_TrEnD
Gave my milestone presentation yesterday! So nice to see it all come together, I feel very lucky and very loved! (Pls see subtweets for photos and mandatory supervisor embarrassment)
Bursting with pride watching @gnester deliver her PhD exit seminar - in true G style it was high quality, sleek & funny! So excited for you - to say your future is so bright is a massive understatement 😎 #eDNA#biodiversity#discovery
New paper out! Blue carbon stocks in the Endangered eelgrass Zostera capensis 🌱
We hope this further highlights the need to protect the extremely valuable yet vulnerable seagrass habitats in southern Africa.

Led by the amazing @miwa_ocean and @MattiSacco who absolutely crushed this one! A great collaborative effort from the @Curtin_TrEnD lab, a lab I am very proud to be a part of!
