#CharlesDarwin died #OTD in 1882. His family had planned to bury him in Downe village, but friends started a lobbying campaign to give him the honor of burial inside @wabbey. A few days later, Darwin was laid to rest in England’s most revered church near Herschel and Newton.

In 1918, on this day, the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act was passed. At 27 words, it is the shortest UK statute, but it was extremely important: it gave women over 21 the right to stand for election as a Member of Parliament.

Fact 22- A city of firsts. In 1806, Salford saw Chapel Street lit by gas powered lighting, the first in the world. 1872 saw the first million pound cheque ever written when the Bridgewater Navigation Company took ownership of Bridgewater canal.
