Monday, the Rent Guidelines Board plans to hold its final on rent increases that would place thousands of tenants at risk of eviction. They feel no shame and pressure to push out our friends and community. We need to stand together and refuse to another Mayor Adams rent increase.

I’d like to weigh in on NBC news' recent decision to hire Ronna McDaniel. By giving her a platform, NBC has given legitimacy to the lies she helped the former president spread. Now we come to the why. Why would NBC News hire someone as controversial?  Here’s the reason: News gathering is a business, and the networks have prioritized widening their audience. They feel the need to show their Republican bona fides by hiring conservative voices. But that is the crux of the problem. Which Republicans? Trump loyalists who are election deniers and January 6 apologists? To me, that doesn’t seem like the answer. It’s another reason independent journalism is essential right now, essential to provide unvarnished coverage in one of the most important elections in American history and to hold the mainstream media accountable. ↓

Inflation rose 14% between July 2020 and July 2022. But corporate profits rose by 75% over those two years — five times as fast as inflation. Remember when the media said “greedflation” was a fringe theory? Now looking back, it’s undeniable.

Where can I find an apartment in NYC that’s $1025 a month? Even a room? To qualify for this rent one needs to make $20 per hour 40 hours a week. $41,600 salary. Met a super who needs a new doorman for $15 per hour that’s a 31,000 salary $775 rent. Where? How? We can do better NYC

Never forget this: The GOP’s nonsensical culture war is meant to distract you from corporate corruption, worker oppression, and staggering wealth inequality.

The Big 3 Automakers have spent $66 billion on stock buybacks and dividends over the decade. That amounts to roughly $440k for each of the ~150,000 workers covered by UAW collective bargaining agreements. And we’re supposed to believe they can’t afford to pay workers more?

Why are thousands of workers across America on strike right now? I guess it’s a mystery. In other news, CEO pay has skyrocketed 1,460% since 1978, while typical worker pay grew by just 18%.

The Big Three have made $250 billion over the last decade, $21 billion in the first six months of 2023 alone. Don’t tell me they can’t afford to pay workers a fair wage.

The Republican Party is anti-raising the wage, anti-child tax credit, anti-unemployment benefits, anti-taxing the rich, and anti-union. And we’re supposed to believe this is the party of the working class?

As long as Ohio has a gerrymandered legislature and pathetically weak gun laws and prevents cities from enacting their own regulations.... no place is safe in Columbus or Central Ohio.

If Issue 1 passes, Ohio will become the only state in the entire country requiring signatures from every single county. That would mean 1 single county could prevent Ohio’s other 87 from bringing an issue to a vote. Issue 1 is undemocratic, unjust, and unfair #VoteNoOnIssue1

I think it’s very instructive to look at neighborhoods which underwent gentrification 20 yrs ago and see what residents were saying back then. Here are residents of Park Slope, Bklyn in the 1980s. Everything they’re saying is true. Vid credit: @DrinkSolaPop

It’s unnecessary to debate whether enslaved people benefitted from slavery. Let us not be distracted by what extremists are trying to do, which is to create unnecessary debates to divide our country. Let us stand together for what we know is right.

Dad died when I was 12. Mom struggled. We received dad’s social security survivor benefits. They helped make ends meet… barely. But just a few years later, Reagan happened. In 1981, to pay for his massive tax cuts for the rich, he cut social security benefits while increasing payroll taxes on working people. But it wasn’t just me and mom. Millions were hurt. He swept over 300,000 people off disability rolls. Tens of thousands died or committed suicide. He promised that benefits from cutting taxes on those that didn’t need it would “trickle down” only to see deficits skyrocket, which Republicans use to blame Democrats and as an excuse to cut programs that helped the vulnerable. But that was the plan. “Starve the Beast” they said. Republicans continue to fight to cut Social Security, Medicare, public education, head start, food stamps, and other programs average working Americans need. Cruelty is always @GOP’s point. Profits over people. Party over country.

“I stopped at Whole Foods on Tuesday, excited to surprise my Mom with her favorite smoothie of all: Banana! After I ordered the drink, I realized that I had made a huge mistake and had to cancel the order. The woman who took my order was very kind and didn’t seem angered by my change of heart, which made me feel relieved. I told her that I completely forgot that my Mom is going through Chemotherapy treatments and can’t drink or eat anything cold. “She has a chemo bag attached to her for the next 46 hours and is extremely sensitive to the cold right now, ” I said. “I totally understand! I have two family members going through chemo right now, too,” she replied. “Does your Mom like Almond Milk? I could easily make her a smoothie without ice and with room temperature almond milk.” Ever since my Mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in October, things have been very chaotic. It never even occurred to me that I could make my Mom’s favorite drink that way, because I have been so focused on a million other things. I excitedly yelled, “Yes, please! That would be perfect!!”, and introduced myself. My new friend told me that her name is Natasha and that she loves working at Whole Foods Market for this EXACT reason~ So, she can help others stay on top of their nutritional goals & health. Natasha proceeded to give me a long list of other natural drinks with electrolytes that will hydrate my Mom and settle her queezy tummy. “My god-daughter, Diamond, was diagnosed with Cancer at Stage IV. It had already spread all over her body. She passed away at only 12 years of age…” Her voice trailed off and her eyes filled with tears. I told Natasha that my Mom was already Stage IV, too, when her Cancer was found and that I was so sorry to hear about Diamond’s passing. As she made my Mom’s smoothie, Natasha and I talked about God, Angels and Love. It’s hard to put into words what this random encounter did to uplift my spirits and boost my mood. I was feeling very stressed about my Mom’s diagnosis when I headed into the store moments before. Natasha’s vibrant smile, kind words & compassion instantly soothed my soul. We constantly hear about all the negative aspects of society in the news. It’s easy to go about your day feeling alone and smothered in problems. And, then, you come across someone, like Natasha Barnes, at Whole Foods in Madison, NJ and you realize that there are truly good-hearted, beautiful people who care, all around us. I thanked Natasha over and over again for all of her advice and encouragement before leaving with my Mom’s smoothie. Natasha flashed me another huge smile and pleaded, “Wait!!!” She then ran from behind the counter and gave me a huge hug. It may seem simple. But, Natasha’s actions were life-changing for me & a reminder that Angels are all around us. It only took a few minutes of conversation for her to restore my faith in humanity. Hopefully, Natasha’s kindness, my Mom’s strength & both of their smiles restore your faith in humanity, too ❤️” Credit: Amanda Sullivan
