Can we stop talking about "skills" and start talking about "experiences"?
Life is not defined by skills.
And, we are not merely the sum total of what we can do.
Experiences are how we live our lives.
Experiences are how our memories are structured.
Experiences are how we make sense of ourselves and the world around us.
Experiences are everything.
Yet, as talent we often undervalue all we have learned.
And, as companies we fail to see the value in analogous, non-work experiences.
Why?
Well, it is because we see experiences through a very narrow lens.
We don't see how:
๐ that time as a stay-at-home parent taught us how lead a team, manage schedules, and have empathy.
๐ that time we traveled around Europe was a showcase of curiosity, adaptability, and honing our ability to stay in the moment.
๐ that year-long effort to lose weight and get back in shape was all about resilience, complex problem solving, and sustained commitment to a cause.
Our lens on skills is too narrow.
Our experiences have taught us more than we realize.
Don't shy away from sharing non-work experiences as part of your story.
Life is the greatest classroom on earth.
And, you are more prepared than you know.
What non-work experiences most shaped you?
