The past or the future - we really need to be heading in only one direction here.
Plans for a nearly 100-unit apartment building on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Edgewater could be halted by the city’s attempts to landmark the street’s historic business corridor blockclubchi.co/4ew64LX

ShotSpotter is good. No, it's bad. Well, wait. What do these recent data points actually mean? I lean on @richsday to help make sense of a new study that all sides viewed very differently. Check it! @acitythatworks youtube.com/watch?v=MAP9PjxX…

As we get ready for our first June weekend in Chicago, let's connect with former CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy on why the media needs to stop with "teen takeovers" and start with "mob actions." @WTBfox32 youtube.com/watch?v=lub9gTnl…

Dozens of public health and disease experts have signed an open letter in support of the nationwide anti-racism protests. "White supremacy is a lethal public health issue that predates and contributes to COVID-19," they wrote. trib.al/iVynMCH

Hasan Piker: Stealing from private businesses can frequently be morally justified. Also Hasan Piker: Chicago is open for business! A new "A Four Star Podcast" with @ILRetail CEO Rob Karr. The argument: theft isn't social justice. Link in replies.

I think it is good practice for those of us ideologically opposed to Mayor Mamdani to recognize smart decisions he makes. "Get money already owed to us" is a policy worth pursuing in Chicago!
Amazon is worth $2 trillion. But it didn't deign to pay the millions of dollars it racked up in unpaid fines as its’ trucks illegally polluted our air and forced New Yorkers to breathe in their exhaust.
We collected every dollar they owe the people of this city — and will continue to hold them accountable. In New York, corporations are held to the same standard as everyone else.
No company — no matter how large or powerful — is above the law.

My favorite data point ever - procured almost two decades ago and can't be forgotten - is the one-gallon of water required to grow one almond. I've been waiting for this to enter into the data center discussion.
Over at Substack, @JoshEakle asks: "It's 2026, and I have yet to see an anti-almond farm protest."

Continuing my "Chicago, But Better" podcast concept. This time we're talking more housing - and more green space!
I was interviewed by Grant on Fox 32 Chicago’s A Four Star Podcast about one of my central arguments: American cities are not losing families because families don’t want city life. They are losing families because we have outlawed the kinds of urban housing and neighborhoods that make family life possible. We talked courtyard blocks, single-stair buildings, double-loaded corridors, Chicago zoning, Lincoln Yards, The 78, and how to build a denser, greener, more family-friendly city. Watch on the link below

A deep rundown of my conversation with Illinois Policy’s @Austin__Berg on the diminishing returns of DSA big city governance. Thanks for the lift, Austin. It’s a topic voters will need to wrestle with over the next decade.
Chicago Magazine ran a provocative piece by Edward McClelland last week, titled “The Progressive Slide.” “It wasn’t all that long ago that progressives had the momentum on City Council,” McClelland wrote. “Fast-forward to this March. They are no longer in control of the agenda. Instead, they’re playing defense, trying to protect what they already gained.” McClelland’s piece centers on Council’s 19-member Progressive Reform Caucus. But the backslide among six aldermen who are self-described democratic socialists—those who composed what Jacobin described as Council’s “socialist wave” in 2019—is perhaps more striking. Not only for that faction of the council, but also for the organizing force they represent. Or what is left of it. thelastward.org/p/the-backsl…

John was on Fox 32's A Four Star Podcast with host Grant Horne. The fun video includes improving the 'L', the "Halloween Miracle" for transit funding, and how "road diets" like the one on Archer can make streets safer and more pleasant for everyone. youtube.com/watch?v=7JhMmIJv…

I for one would be very happy to return to convention on this one, I think it would be extremely healthy for society if insulting people took hours of labor and at the end of it you were sweaty, exhausted, and covered in ink

One of the weirdest inversions of the 21st century is that organisations "try to appeal to the youth" by presenting themselves as unserious and childish rather than creating a serious, prestigious image that the youth can hope to attain if they join.
