A lot to like about Utah State’s newest transfer AJ Bates. Best known for his playmaking (he had 8 assists in 9 games last season), but he can also heat up quickly as a scorer. He closed his LA Tech career with 27, 29 and 34-point performances in March.

Initial Thoughts:
- The Aggies didn’t need to roll the dice on a young, mostly unproven coach. They had four times in a row. Sooner or later the luck was going to run out. This shows you where the program is right now. This is a guy who has won titles, been to the Sweet 16, and was in the tourney just this past year.
- Northern Iowa was going to (and may still yet) build a statue of Ben Jacobson. They loooove him there. For him to leave shows where USU has elevated itself.
- According to his contract (via @KcSmurthwaite) $0 buyout. A good portion of the Calhoun money now can be used for player retention and acquisition.
- No offense to Joe Shmuckatelli from Mendon, but look at what the national media is saying about this hire. Home run after home run.
