We’re glowing! 🌟 Our Ketton Quarry Nature Reserve in Rutland has seen record numbers of glow worms, including in new areas of the site they haven’t been previously recorded 🐛 It’s fantastic news as there has been a big decline in the number of glow worms found in the UK over the 30 years and is a great example of the biodiversity that exists at mineral extraction sites. The reserve, which is a restored part of our Grange Top quarry adjacent to our Ketton cement works, is home to a number of nationally scarce species of invertebrate as well as being a significant site for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and wildflowers. When the volunteers at The Strawberry Line Society made a public appeal for support, our Batts Combe quarry in Cheddar was more than happy to help. 🙌 Along with Holcim’s Callow Rock quarry in Shipham, we donated over 1,000 tonnes of mixed aggregates to support the creation of a new section of the car-free route linking local communities near the Mendip Hills. 🍓 The Strawberry Line project is a fantastic example of local businesses coming together to support the community and encourage active travel, and we were delighted to be involved.
