This is why I'm teaching my grade 4 & 5 students about where their water comes from and how Earth's systems interact.
Our water is contaminated with a chemical from termite poison.
How did it get there?
Why is this important?
What should we do?

My 4th and 5th graders investigate water and land interaction this week. The issue of Red Hill jet fuel tank leakage is why understanding where our water comes from is important. These jet fuel tanks are very near to the Halawa Shaft and aquifer.

We collected samples from various places in our classroom… the sink, a window, a desk, a pencil, a trash can, and of course some of our compost bottles. On Monday we will see what happens!

Ties into our explorations of how matter is made of particles that are too small to see. My students have had experiences with dissolving sugar in water, compressing air in a syringe, and now watching bacteria multiply. Nice progression of ideas.

Our initial question board based on our experience with the phenomenon of ‘ōpala on O‘ahu. Today we will decide on the unit driving question and plan our first investigation.
