988 has the potential to change the way we treat mental health crises in America, but only if we can fund it at the federal level.
Thank you @latimes for calling on Congress to pass my #988Implementation Act and include it in a spending bill. latimes.com/opinion/story/20…
Earlier this year, the House passed the #RestoringHope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act. This bill includes provisions from my #988Implementation and Parity Implementation Assistance Acts, which work to make mental health care accessible for all Americans.
Implementing 988 here in Los Angeles requires all hands on deck, and I'm happy that @Sycamores_CA is going to help provide mobile crisis outreach team services.
My #988Implementation Act would increase funding for 988 so we can get the right care to those who need it.
Going forward, I will continue the fight to get my #988Implementation Act across the finish line to send California and other states the federal funding they need for crisis response services.
Let’s be clear: Being mentally ill is not a crime. Being suicidal is not a crime. Having a substance use disorder is not a crime.
We need to stop criminalizing mental illness and get people in crisis the help they need. The #988Implementation Act does that and more.
To wrap up #NHCW22, I visited @NEVHC to hear about the crucial role they play here in the Valley. I told them about my work on #988Implementation and we discussed other ways Congress can support health centers.
As Americans begin dialing 988 this summer, we have an opportunity to make sure real-time help and services are available to anyone in need. The #988Implementation Act introduced by @repcardenas will give states the funding to ensure this transformation is fully realized.
The #988Lifeline is live and helping people across the nation through mental health crises. But for 988 to truly be an alternative to 911, we need federal and state funding for #988Implementation that will support more mobile crisis teams and crisis centers.
988 will save lives, but it has to be properly funded.
Our #988Implementation Act would provide federal funding for the #988Lifeline, but we need more states to step up to the plate and meet their own staffing and funding needs.
It’s the only way we’re going to make 988 work.
The only 988 call center in South Carolina used federal funding to fill eight new positions. Fearing that would be inadequate long term, the organization is seeking grants and raising money through a GoFundMe page.

Parts of our #988Implementation Act passed the House at the end of June. The #988Lifeline goes live this weekend and we need resources available across the nation. It's time for the Senate to pass the #RestoringHope for Mental Health & Well-Being Act.
Last night we passed the #RestoringHope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act. Several provisions of my #988Implementation Act—like support for crisis response teams— were included. This is great news, but we must do more to provide care nationwide.

Today I spoke to Congressional staff about 988 and my #988Implementation Act. People in crisis will soon have someone to call, but we need to #Fund988 to ensure that states have the resources to send someone to help and provide somewhere to go.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among children and young people.
To help end this crisis, I'm voting to pass the #RestoringHope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act, which includes portions of my #988Implementation Act.
#988 will go live in exactly one month, meaning anyone in crisis can call for help.
But a new phone line alone is not enough — we need our #988Implementation Act for a fully-funded response system: someone to call, someone to come and somewhere to go.

I'll be giving an update on our #988Implementation Act and the need for increased investments for a full continuum of crisis services.
Denver has been dispatching crisis teams for mental health emergencies—and it’s working. People are getting help and crime and costs are down.
Our #988Implementation Act will help cities across the country do the same.

When 988 goes live next month, we need to be ready to respond to mental health crises.
My #988Implementation Act will provide funding to ensure that responses don't just end with a call, but connect those who need help with services on the ground.
