Angola Discovers Over One Trillion Cubic Feet of Natural Gas
Angola has announced a major natural gas discovery in the Lower Congo Basin at the Gajajeira‑01 well, located about 60 kilometers offshore. Preliminary assessments indicate the field contains over one trillion cubic feet of gas and up to 100 million barrels of condensate oil. This marks the country’s first dedicated gas discovery and places it among the top ten in Africa.
The discovery is part of Block 1/14, operated by Azule Energy in partnership with Equinor, Sonangol E&P, and Acrep S.A. The well intersected more than 30 meters of reservoir with good mobility during drilling.
Officials from Angola’s National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels highlighted that this find offers new potential for energy access, domestic use, and growth in petrochemicals and fertilizers.
While not the largest in African history, as larger reserves exist in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin, this is the first major gas discovery in Angola. It signals a pivotal moment for Angola as it diversifies beyond oil and aims to become a significant regional natural gas producer.
