OPERATIONAL STUDY TOUR: TEAM OF AIR FORCE WAR COLLEGE NIGERIA VISITS THEATRE OF OPHK The Team of the Air force War College Nigeria (AFWC), visited the Headquarters Theatre Command of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, on operational study tour of the theatre of OPHK. In his remarks, the Commandant of the AFWCN and Team Leader, Air Vice Marshal Gambo Mbaka, conveyed appreciation to the Theatre Command for hosting the delegation. He acknowledged the operational demands on troops in the North East and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact with personnel and observe ongoing operations firsthand. The Team Leader also noted that AFWCN Course 12, inaugurated on 2 January , 2026, includes operational visits as part of its academic programme to expose participants to the practical realities of contemporary military operations. As the premier professional military institution of the Nigerian Air Force, the College is mandated to develop officers in the effective employment of air power at the operational level and to build qualitative manpower for efficient air operations. Air Vice Marshal Mbaka stated that the visit was designed to consolidate knowledge gained through lectures and discussions by providing direct exposure to operational and campaign planning, joint force employment, and assessment of air capabilities in ongoing operations. He emphasised that countering evolving threats requires a coordinated, intelligence-driven approach integrating air, land, and special operations within a joint framework. He added that the Nigerian Air Force remains a critical component of OPHK through intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, offensive air operations, air mobility, and logistics support. Equally, In his response, the Theatre Commander OPHK, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar highlighted progress recorded in the ongoing dry season operations conducted in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). He stated that the theatre is currently in the kinetic phase of its campaign, with the area of operations reorganised. He added that operational locations have been expanded to ensure effective coverage across the theatre. The Theatre Commander emphasised on the critical role of air power in countering asymmetric threats, noting that OPHK units have in recent weeks successfully neutralised hostile drones without casualties to ground troops. To enhance operational coordination, he disclosed that a Joint Fire Support Coordinating Centre has been established to regulate air platform movements, assign tasks, and define arcs of fire during operations. He further noted that insurgency campaigns are often prolonged, citing examples from other regions. Major General Abubakar described OPHK as a formidable force within the sub-region, noting that no operational position has been overrun or dislodged in recent times. He revealed that troops have continued to dominate the battlespace, neutralising scores of insurgents, including about 1,000 fighters and 67 commanders in the first quarter of 2026. He added that insurgent capabilities have been significantly degraded, while own troop losses remain minimal. The visit was attended by Component Commanders, Chief of Staff of the Headquarters Theatre Command OPHK, Field Commanders, Principal Staff Officers of the Headquarters Theatre Command OPHK and other Staff officers of the Theatre Command. Highlight of the visit included an operational briefing, interactive session, endorsement of the visitors’ register, exchange of plaques, and a group photograph. STRENGTHENING MILITARY COHESION: Operation FANSAN YAMMA Hosts Airforce War College The Headquarters, Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA (HQ JTF NW OPFY), hosted a delegation from the Air Force War College (AFWC) on a national study tour to the Joint Area of Operations on 29 April 2026. The delegation, led by the Commandant of the College, was received by the Theatre Commander (TC), OPFY, Major General Warrah Idris, and was briefed on the activities of Operation FANSAN YAMMA. During the interactive engagement, the Theatre Commander warmly welcomed the Commandant and his entourage to the Theatre Command. He commended the AFWC for its significant strides in producing capable, competent, and resilient mid-level commanders for the Nigerian Air Force, who are able to effectively deliver air power in support of military operations in the North West region and across Nigeria. Major General Idris emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among the services’ war colleges through deliberate exchanges of directing staff and officers. According to him, such initiatives would foster greater jointness among the services and contribute to the success of joint operations in the country. He encouraged participants to take full advantage of the engagement by asking insightful and critical questions, noting that the interaction would enrich their understanding of joint operational environments. He also expressed appreciation to the Commandant for selecting the Theatre Command and Zamfara State as part of the study tour, adding that the visit would provide valuable firsthand insight into the conduct of operations in the North West. In his earlier remarks, the Commandant, AFWC, Air Vice Marshal Gambo Mbaka, expressed gratitude to the Theatre Commander for the warm reception and the opportunity to engage with the Theatre. He described the College as a premier professional military institution responsible for training operational-level officers of the rank of Group Captain and equivalents from the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy as well as allied officers. Air Vice Marshal Mbaka noted that since the commencement of Course 12 in January this year, participants had undergone several modules with emphasis on operational art, joint planning, and the employment of air power. He added that as part of the course requirements, participants undertake a national study tour aimed at broadening their perspectives on the role of air power in support of civil authority and national development. The Commandant also acknowledged the pivotal role played by HQ JTF OPFY in planning, coordinating, and executing offensive operations aimed at combating terrorism, banditry, and other forms of armed criminality within the Theatre. He emphasized that the integration of land, air, and other security components is critical to achieving operational success under the leadership of the Theatre Commander. He further noted that the synergy of these elements offers participants valuable lessons in joint operations, operational leadership, and inter-agency cooperation. The Commandant’s entourage comprised four members of the college faculty and 15 participants, including 13 Nigerian Air Force officers, one Nigerian Navy officer, and one officer from the Ghanaian Air Force. The visit featured an interactive session, signing of the visitors’ register, a group photograph, and a get-together hosted in honour of the delegation, during which the Theatre Commander presented souvenirs to the Commandant and members of his team. AFWC is somehow even more toxic than AFC. Wild overreaction. If she’d stayed in position and Liverpool scored, that would’ve been wrong too. She’s barely played — a nervous moment or two is normal. Back the team instead.
