Those concerned about Generative AI/Large Language Models (LLMs) displacing development/coding and engineering jobs should reconsider their views.
Having worked in this area for some time, I foresee one of three possible outcomes:
1. Organizations will expect greater productivity and faster turnaround from engineers. All "buffers" will be rigorously scrutinized, essentially demanding more value for the investment.
2. The era of "two pizza teams" will become obsolete. "One pizza teams" will become the standard.
3. Engineers who provide low value will be phased out of the market.
The latter does not indicate the end of development or coding careers. Rather, it indicates that securing a job requires more than just writing "Hello World!" in a programming language or memorizing "Top 'n' interview questions in a programming language" before an interview. Engineers will need to elevate their efforts. Drawing an analogy from air travel, one should aim to evolve from an "Economy Class" Engineer to a "Business Class" or "First Class" Engineer. In essence, as always, with every cycle of innovation, it's the "Economy Class" level of skills that is becoming obsolete.
As organizations explore higher value products and services, there certainly will be more "Premium Class only" airlines made available. 😉😉
Cease your worries, fasten your seatbelt, and gear up for a better preparation! 🙂
