Hilton appeared passionate about conservation and tackling global warming, writing in his book More Human that acidification is an “urgent problem” for the world’s oceans and warning about soil health and marine ecosystems being destroyed by overuse of fertilizers. Camaleon?

would ideally be very thinly diluted with seawater beforehand, to counteract ocean acidification

Climate change. Ocean acidification. Deforestation. It can all seem like a lot. And it is! But you'd be surprised how our day-to-day individual actions can help out in the long run. Here are some simple things you can do this month to help nature out locally... and globally.

The momentum in the room was clear: ocean acidification is rising on the regional agenda, and so is the commitment to act. Now we move forward with political leadership, finance, enhanced science–policy interface and institutional coordination. Read more about action on OA in the region: static1.squarespace.com/stat…

Ocean acidification is no longer solely an environmental challenge. It is a: 🐟 Food security challenge. 🎣 Fisheries and livelihoods challenge. 🌍 Climate resilience and sustainable development challenge. The opportunity now is moving from scientific awareness to implementation of the OA Action Plan – mainstreaming this information into key climate and ocean policies and funding solutions.

Participants from Seychelles 🇸🇨, Kenya 🇰🇪, Mauritius 🇲🇺, development and finance institutions, regional organizations, and #OceanAcidification scientists all turned out to move from science to implementation on the Regional Ocean Acidification Action Plan, now adopted under the Nairobi Convention.

The State of Loss and Damage report must expose the true funding gap, you can’t solve what you don’t fully understand. Just as the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report has driven awareness and action, it’s time for a dedicated Loss and Damage Gap Report. It must reveal the full scale of impacts across all developing countries, from climate disasters to slow-onset changes like drought, sea-level rise, and ocean acidification. This includes both economic and non-economic losses, health, education, culture, and land rights. The message must be clear: developed countries and institutions must #PayUp4LossAndDamage. #CANEA #CANEasternAfrica #Bonn #sb64

Human activities drive environmental degradation primarily through habitat destruction, resource exploitation, and widespread pollution. The seven most destructive activities are: Deforestation: Clearing vast areas of forest for agriculture, cattle ranching, and urban development destroys essential carbon sinks, causes soil erosion, and rapidly accelerates biodiversity loss. Burning Fossil Fuels: Using coal, oil, and gas for energy and transportation releases massive amounts of greenhouse gases, driving global climate change, sea-level rise, and ocean acidification. Industrial Pollution: Dumping untreated toxic waste, plastics, and chemicals into the air, rivers, and oceans contaminates ecosystems and endangers wildlife. Overfishing and Overhunting: Unsustainable harvesting practices deplete marine populations faster than they can reproduce and push species toward extinction. Industrial Agriculture: The widespread use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, alongside intensive irrigation and monocropping, degrades soil quality, pollutes groundwater, and creates toxic runoff. Plastic Use: The continuous production and improper disposal of single-use plastics introduce hazardous microplastics into food chains and natural habitats. Mining and Resource Extraction: Mining for minerals and metals destroys natural landscapes, alters water tables, and releases heavy metals into surrounding soils and waterways
In your opinion, what is the biggest threat to humanity?

Ocean Acidification Is Fatal To Fish
Are we running out of fish? No, but that doesn’t mean sustainability can be taken for granted, says @Manu_FAO. Tune in to the latest episode of The Work We Do, where @FAO’s Manuel Barange answers this and discusses the findings of #SOFIA2026. 🎥 youtube.com/watch?v=panhXRmm…

We have a solid understanding of ocean acidification after nearly 40 years of monitoring, Jim (fig 1 & 2) We know that ~25% of human CO2 emissions go into the oceans (varying largely due to ENSO) (fig 3) And ~90% of the AGW added heat is taken up by the oceans (fig 4)

"We expect a lot from #soils", says Glinka World Soil Prize Winner, Professor Ganlin Zhang. For this reason, we must be diligent and careful about increasing chemicals like phosphorus & potassium at the cost of this balance and at the cost of desertification & acidification
