What a set of elections.
Iβm incredibly proud to have played a part in so many winning campaigns across London. The teams I worked with in Greenwich, Bromley, Bexley and Croydon were fantastic, and it was brilliant to see us hold back the tide of Reform in places where many expected them to break through.
Being at the Bexley count on Thursday night was genuinely surreal. We went in thinking that winning 10 seats would be a strong result, instead, we won 29 and held control of the council. A huge credit to the councillors, campaigners and local team in Bexley who worked tirelessly to deliver that result.
In Greenwich, we doubled our number of seats. While some excellent candidates narrowly missed out, we successfully held off Reform in the Eltham wards we campaigned in, which was a huge achievement.
Croydon was another highlight. My good friend Jack Barwell was elected as a councillor, not by a handful of votes, but by more than 400. Back in January, it was obvious the ward would be a tight contest against Reform and the Greens, but the campaign team worked relentlessly and the result reflected that effort. Itβs been also great to get to know his newly re-elected ward colleague Andy Stranack.
I also worked in several other Croydon wards. We held off a major Reform push in Shirley, where they were desperate to take the two seats from us, and helped get Jeet Bains re-elected in Addiscombe East. While Iβm disappointed we couldnβt quite get Richard Hoque over the line, it was still a strong campaign and everyone involved should be proud of the work we put in.
Outside London, results were more mixed, but there were still some standout performances. In West Surrey, my good friend Sam Tough narrowly missed out by fewer than 20 votes in a ward I personally thought was unwinnable. The fact he still helped deliver a Conservative councillor there is a testament to the hard work and determination he put in throughout the campaign. Politics can be brutal sometimes.
I also briefly helped in Exeter. While the campaign there wasnβt quite as organised as the operations I experienced in London, there was still some incredibly hard work from candidates. Joan Collacott in St Loyes came agonisingly close, losing by just 10 votes. Absolutely gutted for her.
Most importantly, thank you to my amazing girlfriend Anna for putting up with me through what has been an incredibly busy and stressful few months.
Over this campaign period, Iβve met brilliant people, visited new places, learned a huge amount, and helped deliver Conservative victories. Iβm proud of what we achieved.
